Title: Pupper Winter Wild Camp. Drinnahilly. Donard Wood. Mourne mountains.
Post by: NIPupper on January 01, 2018
bit of an explore round donard wood, checking out the Mourne Aqueduct ventilation shaft and Annesley Grotto as well as the Silurian shales visible at Drinnahilly (the original surface of the mourne region until glaciers removed most of it leaving the hardened granite of the giant magma chambers exposed. 29-30 December 2017.
Quite a bit of broken trees about, either the wind or an angry troll. i'm thinking it was a troll.

Mourne Aqueduct ventilation shaft
Mourne Aqueduct constructed between 1897 - 1901 to transport water from the Kilkeel and Annalong Rivers. Ventilation shaft is approximately 60m deep. Tunnel runs up to 180m below ground. A second tower at Drinneevar quarry was demolished after the tunnel was completed. It may be seen on the skyline in this old postcard, circa 1900.
