Title: Christmas Dinner & Camp 2017
Post by: RedLeader on November 06, 2017
(http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/images/christmas-camp-2015-large.jpg)

What : Christmas Dinner with all the trimmings
When : Saturday/Sunday 9th/10th December 2017
Where : Annalong Wood (Secure parking at Carrick Plant Hire)
Who : Everyone

As ever, everyone needs to read and understand the safety and responsibility notice linked here if they want to attend. You agreed to this when you signed up for the forum but you must read it again in case it has changed. If there's anything in there you don't agree to you mustn't come. Remember, this is a winter camp. You need to be experienced and prepared for any conditions:
http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/forum-news-information-and-help/ni-wild-meets-safety-and-responsibilty/

So you've sat around an open fire, maybe toasted a few marshmallows or pushed the boat out and cooked a steak on the campfire? Well if you think that's outdoor eating then you're in for a surprise when you get yourself to a Christmas Camp.

A full turkey dinner with all the fixings, washed down with hot mulled wine followed by a variety of desserts and all accompanied by the pulling of crackers under trees festooned with fairy lights and in-front of a roaring fire - that's how you eat outdoors!
There's been a Christmas dinner in the Mournes every year since 2010 which each time has without exception been the highlight of the outdoor year. Everyone brings a part of the feast, complex foods are prepared at home for heating over the fire, simpler foods are cooked up there. We all scurry around a huge campfire organising our own portion of the meal which is then served to all who have joined us. When the main course is done we tuck into Xmas pudding, mince pies and anything else that thoughtful people have brought and we have a merry old evening by the fire listening to festive tunes and giggling into the night before retiring to tents and bivvies for a relaxing nights sleep.

If you haven't tried it then you haven't lived - join us and you'll be sitting at the table on Christmas Day looking at the turkey and remembering how much better a Christmas Dinner tastes when you're eating it round an open fire with like minded friends.

There's plenty of room to camp but if you want to come for the meal and head home after that's fine too.
As usual, all suggestions welcomed!

Reply to the post to be added to the list and remember to say what you'll be bringing for the meal

Please remember we NEED FOOD so try and put your name down for food before other items
Also, if you're intending to come or on the fence, please have your name added as at least tentative so we can account for potential numbers. Is better to have too much than too little.

Here's last years shindig.

My drama is off and I can come at a more respectable time now. Would be aiming to be at Annalong early afternoon.

Weather is looking just about as good as we could expect at this point. Going to be bloody cold though, wrap up warm folks  8)

Storm Caroline to hit Scotland followed by snow for wider UK (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-42236258)

Quote
The UK's next named storm has been forecast to hit Scotland on Thursday.

Storm Caroline is expected to see winds gusting to 80mph near north-facing coasts, and reaching speeds of 60 to 70mph more widely in northern and north east Scotland.

The Met Office warned that the conditions could disrupt travel.

Snow and freezing temperatures have been forecast for Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales on Friday and Saturday in the wake of Caroline.

The two previous named storms were Aileen in September and Brian in October.

A yellow "be aware" warning is in place for Scotland between 08:00 and 23:55 on Thursday.

Yellow warnings have also been issued by the Met Office for 00:05 Friday to 18:00 Saturday.

The Met Office said snow showers were expected to become increasingly frequent over northern Scotland late on Thursday.

Snow is expected to fall across many other parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and western England on Friday, with between 2cm and 5cm likely in some areas.

The Met Office said up to 20cm was possible over high ground, mainly in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

It added: "Icy surfaces are also likely to be an additional hazard, especially overnight.

"Strong northwest winds may cause drifting of the snow in places, with blizzard conditions possible at times across northern Scotland."

The wintry weather follows snow and cold temperatures experienced in parts of Scotland earlier this month.

Scotland's mountain ranges, including the Cairngorms and Glen Coe, have already seen heavy snow falls in recent weeks.

Hi Folks,

I realise I'm a tad late to the party but I'm planning on heading out for the Christmas camp with Rumblebum.

Am I correct in saying that the only things left on the list are Port and Christmas pudding?

I see there is Christmas Cake and Port.  Will I bring the Cake? and port or more port if someone already bringing or is there something else?

Also on Comms quoted from PMR446 thread 'We use channel 6 so if you are coming to a meet and have one of these units then you should be able to contact us once you are within range. If possible let us know in advance so we know to keep them switched on.' 'These are PMR446 standard walkie talkies so they should work interchangeably with any other PMR446 units.'

I have a few of these as I'm coming a mid afternoon I can try and make contact when we park on the way up, if anyone has one.

First post on this topic for me since I can't make it, for the first time in ages.  Pure gutted!  Work do and all that nonsense.  I'm watching the cry-offs on the work list and still wondering if the thing will fall apart.  Snow might put a couple more off.  Designated driver has pulled out so I'm under my own steam.  Might do no harm to throw a wee down jacket and a tent in the boot just in case  ;)

Have a great one, all of ye's.  The snow would make it spectacular, provided you can get there safely.

Guys, what are the thoughts on tomorrow?
I love camping in the snow but I also know that road up to Carrick Little car park.
Getting up and down the hill here to my house in Belfast has been fun today and it's not going to get any better overnight.
I think I will play it by ear tomorrow.

Yep, I'm wary too. I have a car that doesn't perform well in slippy weather. What do you all think?

Hardly any snow up here in Newcastle folks  :'( compared to Belfast. Tomorrow's forecast looks great, but think we might have to make a quick dash for the cars sunday morning. It'll either be Heavy snow or Heavy rain  ::)  Is there a specific time we need to be there to start cooking?

Grizzly Dave, our mad man on the hill is going to let us know what it's like in the morning after he's had his morning swim in the Annalong river and caught his breakfast  8) We'll also check with the car park at Carrick Little at about 10am to see what the conditions are like and will post here. As of 7pm this evening the Head Road and Carrick Little Lane were clear and driveable.

We want to aim to eat by 7ish since it's going to be a cold one. We'll want a good sized fire and plenty of wood gathered before dark to see us through the evening. I'll be aiming to be up there at 2-3pm with an eye to starting cooking before 6pm.

Our yellow warning for snow remains in force tonight and into tomorrow. Along with our Amber warning for snow on Sunday.

DFI - The Salting of roads on the scheduled network considered to be at risk is planned for this evening and overnight. Road users are advised to exercise caution when travelling, particularly when driving on untreated roads.

My dad always said rear wheel drive cars are actually much better in snow because you have the option of loading as much weight as you want onto the driving wheels. Just fill the boot with weight. I have never owned a rear wheel drive car myself to test the theory..

Grizzly Dave is alive and well and says the conditions are the same and there's been no more snow overnight.

Unsurprisingly he says it's extremely cold!

I spoke to Carrick Plant Hire again who run the car park and they also say, no more snow overnight and there's already a few cars parked.

It's worth noting that there's potentially more snow forecast for Sunday morning so bear that in mind when planning for coming back.

Very good Jonno I like it psml  ;D ;D
Another great camp, great food and great criac thanks to all for a brill night ;) ;) :D :D ;D ;D

Waking up to snow instead of rain this morning was amazing! It made the camp so much more special. Roll on next year x

It was a pleasure to join you all, if a little late.  Always the highlight of the year for catching up. The weather was fantastic, a couple of extra layers I had were left in the rucksack.  Credit to those keeping the fire going!

I'm sorry now that I didn't end up joining you. The idea of a hot shower after the days dander was just too appealing! I hope all went well!

Another brilliant Christmas camp folks!

Well done to all who braved that crazy weather to put that feast together, you're all mad in the head!  :D

I'd just like to suggest that we don't put soooo much wine in the gravy next year, it left me in tatters the next day!  ;D

Hopefully il get to see you all again soon.

I got a blast up Slieve Binnian the next morning.  Whilst it was tough work to get up with a full pack the views were incredible.

It would have been something special to have woken up to this.

Well the plan to go up helped justify the journey for a short evening.

Great pictures on Binnian. Watched you trek up from the track. I wish I had of gone too!!
A bit of company would have been nice.  I had the place to myself and only met of a few other walkers on my descent.  Mind you there were plenty of cars at Carrick Little.  Most folk must have headed to the Blue Lough or the Binnian/Lamagan col.
