For a while now I've been looking to get my other half onboard with walking / camping etc - it would allow me to spend more time out and about while still getting to spend time with her. Finally convinced her to take a walk with me yesterday. Wearing her jeans and berghaus - and an old pair of trail shoes of mine - we had a walk around cavehill.

Made decent enough time although she did stop and take over 100 photos! Despite strong winds, she really enjoyed it - and considering she isn't sore at all today, wants to make it a regular bi-weekly thing. Once I get her accustomed to cavehill - next it's the mournes! woohoo

Always good to have the other half on board.  I'm embarking on the same mission myself at the minute although mine is probably fitter than me so it will be me stopping for the photo/rest stops.

My suggestion would be, don't push your luck though.  Get a good forecast before setting out and make sure you have some nice grub/treats/picnic style lunch/hot drinks etc when you do head into the Mournes.  If you get a rough one and Ms Ed gets a freezing, and a hungry tum, she may never venture out again.

An absolute no go would be camping till the weather gets warmer... stick to day trips till then and ease her in gently.

Hope it all works out and hopefully see the both of you in the hills soon.

Well that's what I'm aiming for - just not letting on just yet ;-)
The fact that I clean the boots and wash the gear at the end of all of it each time seems to boost her acceptance of it. I don't mind it either, I have a ridiculously detailed boot cleaning regimen - but it works - you'd never know I've left the house in these things I have to say I rather enjoy it, oddly lol

Commedagh summit camp would be nice, bring the kelly kettle - unlimited supply of tea and coffee thanks to that water pipe, would be a great night.

In my case no toilet = no way, full stop, end of story.

I could offer a free unicorn ride to the summit of Bearnagh where there was a Tiffanys giving away free diamonds but if there weren't proper toileting facilities we still wouldn't be going

Well I have that exact same problem. But I'm hoping if I just ignore the camping side of things and let her enjoy the walking, things will progress naturally.

I mentioned the shewee briefly once, but I'm not going to try and talk her into it, she says she's perfectly happy with me camping occasionally without her provided I'm with sensible people (rules out most of my mates then!)

Well I didn't get the missus onboard today but got my 7 and 8 year old girls out on their first "mountain" climb. Like Ed I took them the top of Cavehill for a wee Sunday adventure to see how they would get on, and they loved it, thankfully.
We didn't take too long either and no tears, quite a bit of slipping, sliding and picking themselves up though as it was very mucky, and snowy too, though the snowball fight was good craic.
A few more gentle hikes before summer and they will be fit for a spot of wild camping in the mournes lol.

well done on getting them out on such a cold day    is that a wee cave i see up there?

 i've a daughter that age too, as do quite a few members here, we'll have to get together for a girls day out, well you know what i mean

We weren't that cold today, until we got to the top but we were sheltered on the way up. Yeah its a pretty decent sized cave behind them in the pic, we scrambled into it.
I think a girls day out would be a good idea sometime lol .
