CG & Mouldsy's day out
« on: July 14, 2009 »

Myself and Mouldsy had a day out reciently. here's a few pictures. We decided to have a go at making come camp furniture and do a bit of spoon carving.

First thing was to drill some holes into a split log with an auger.

First hole drilled. now just need another 3, all drilled in at an angle.
Next thing was to get 4 hazel sticks (I used hazel because they are very strong and grow fairly straight) slightly thicker than the holes I've just drilled, and I then taper the ends into a conical shape and batton them into the holes in the split log.

Here is the bench with the legs fitted.

To complete the job, I've added some cordage between the front and rear legs to help stop the legs spreading. It was all good and sturdy.

here is one of the spoons we made. Just needs some sanding to finish.

We also made some tongs to help with the camp cookery.

Looks like a top day out. Did you get decent weather? It's been pretty changeable lately.

Hardly ever use a tent. Normally we use a tarp, but sometimes we make our own shelters.

The weather was fine up until about 6pm. We had the kids with us though, so we had just packed and were back at the cars when it started to rain.

It takes about an hour and a half to knock out a basic spoon shape. It's very satisifying work.

I bought myself a hooked knife but haven't had a chance to use it in anger yet...

AN HOUR AND A HALF!?
I'd be quicker walking to Ikea!    ;)

Sure it would take you that long just to walk round Ikea and get through the check out.
