So thinking of taking my kid up to Annalong wood for the his first proper trek into the mournes tomorrow night but can you advice me as to the handiest place to pack.  Just encase it goes pair shaped and he starts beating me to get back home to his beloved xbox.

I'm assuming you mean handiest place to park? ;)

For Annalong Wood the two handiest spots are the Carrick Little car park and a stone gate way on the Head Road.  Unfortunately they are a bit isolated so I can't vouch for the safety of your car, but plenty of us have left our cars there to date and (touch wood) no dramas so far...

it is possibile to get a car up the laneway beside the carrick little car park, there one spot where you have to go very very slow though, not sure if parking is allowed up there but many people leave their car at the gate at the end of the lane, space for about 5 cars there, but drive well up the verge as the route is used by tractors with BIG trailers and they may need a wide berth to turn into fields

When parking at either site (and staying out) I always stick on a steering-wheel lock thing just in case. Plus don't keep any valuables in the car.
