I would have no teeth left if they sold this stuff locally. Love it!

love the stuff, but the sugar high will be followed by a sugar low  :(

Very true Liam. Sugar rushes pull you down. I could eat a ton of stuff like this at home watching football, etc.

Recently when I've been pushing myself on a trail I carry a few Nakd wholefoods bars. Tastes like dirt but good stuff in my opinion. I get mine off Amazon.

Sounds like you've never tried Clif bars: Why eat dirt when there's tasty natural energy bars!

Mule bars are good too but rather expensive.
Powerbar Ride bars are tasty too but rather less natural!

There's also some decent cereal bars in the supermarkets... or 4-pack of Boost bars for a pound  ;D

I can't handle chewy stuff while walking. My mouth is always too dry - and I'm too warm - no matter how hydrated I am.

I find the kendal mint cake nice because it's quite "cooling" and doesn't have the stickyness of honey or chocolate - or the chewiness of some stuff like oats.

Wouldn't touch those energy gels though after trying them on Carrauntoohil - like a strawberry flavoured snotter in a sachet

I'll check out the Clif bar Craig. Sounds good. Boosts are always tempting!

Some of the 'healthy' bars can be tough going. I've tried quite a few over the years. Let's face it -- compressed sawdust isn't easy to get down...

Did anyone watch the program on BBC1(?) last night about energy drinks. They investigated whether or not they actually worked and how much of it was the placebo effect.

I didn't catch all of it, just a couple of minutes.

My poison of choice is a bag of raisins, dried fruity goodness.

I watched that programme a few weeks back, if it's the one I'm thinking of.

The bottom line seemed to be, drink water when your body says you're thirsty.

The Clif bars are certainly chewy, but far from dry. My fav is the peanut, but hard to beat choc chip too. Tiso, Chain Reaction, and VeloCafeMagasin all sell them locally.

Aragorn, a lot of the gels are pretty thick and sickly sweet, but you should try a high5 gel before you write them off completely: they're more watery (even the non-isotonic ones) and have a more caramel type taste (with a hint of whatever flavour the packet says). They're definitely my favourite of the lot, Torx 2nd, and I've tried Powerbar, SIS, Zipvit, Clif offerings. I should do a blog post about them all  ;D

I've tried the high5 tricarb before - it's pretty tasty so I'd definitely give the gels a go.

I don't tend to consume them as a matter of course, but it's handy to have something with a bit of a sugar hit in the event you get slammed by unexpected fatigue. Not much size or weight to worry about either.

Aye, you don't really need to live on them unless you're flat out, but nice energy ramp when you're hitting wall town. There are some (gel 'plus') with a bit of caffeine in them for an extra pick-me-up, think it's 32mg about an expresso... a good choice for the emergency ration. Some out there like the big Zipvit caffeine gels or the High5 Xtreme powder have 150mg  :o

My lunch time coffee yesterday consisted of two large double shotted lattes from the local coffee shop. Total of 8x espressos in 45 mins

1 hour of incredible productivity
Thereafter I felt like I was having a stroke.

I'm thankful to genetics and random chance I don't have any faulty liver enzymes.
