Errigal - 11 September 10
« on: September 14, 2010 »

(Firstly, not sure whether this post should appear here or in Activities> Walking.  Please move if you wish.)

As I mentioned on the other Errigal thread, we had a go at this almost exactly a year later than the other guys, but didn't enjoy the same weather.  I just knew it!!

Anyways, still a good wee trip.  I thought I'd stick a few pics up, just for a bit of lunchtime browsing you understand, no ability here to take a good photo.  The Glover Highlander Walk (Muckish to Errigal, and with everything in between) was on and we were heading the opposite way.  It seems like a really tough walk with some serious descents in between some of the mountains.  I would love to try it....some time.

Not the most impressive sight to begin with, the hill that is ;)

It started reasonably well.

Getting aquainted with the bog!  You can see the foot marks below.

Some view.

At the top, apparently.

I wouldn't have been standing there had I been able to see down.

Heading for Mackoght.

Green things.

Looking down on Lough Altan from Mackoght.

Beaghy next.

Sleepy Hollows camp site.

Imagine our frustration at seeing this the next morning.

Dunlewey Church and Lake.

Looking up the Poison Glen.

Awesome, cheers for sharing. Donegal is on my list of places to do a bit of hiking and wild camping. May as well knock Errigal off while we're there. Is there anywhere on the summit you can pitch?

Errigal looks class.

How about a winter ascent?

Summit doesn't look big enough to pitch on, it's a narrow ridge.

Here's the route of the Glover Highland Walk:

You could do it over 2 days, camping at Altan Farm (not in use).  As a guide, we met walkers at the col between Mackoght and Errigal at about 1:30pm, who said they had started at Muckish at about 6am.

The summit is tiny, I mean really tiny!!

When I was up, there was a gale blowing and I spent my time on the summit very much hunched down low to the ground. Having said that, no doubt someone on here will attempt a bivy!

Done a write up of my trip which is at: http://www.walkingandhikingireland.com/?p=3

It's a really lovely mountain in an amazing area. Can also fit Muckish into a day trip - the summit plateau of Muckish is on the surreal side, it's huge and is covered with large rocks..

Gotta get back up there soon!
