who's the king of the castle?
« on: March 10, 2011 »

Well my highest summit is a mere 850m (Slieve Donard) so that puts me in the dirty wee rascal category, so tell us your highest climbs and we'll see who's the king?

Lenny is going to win this isn't he! If it hadn't been for the flipping severe bowel disturbances I would have Island Peak to beat him at 6189m... google tells me Kala Pattar is 5545m so that is my land-based high point, and due to latitude I probably had less oxygen  :D
Rounding out the top three are:
Jbel Toubkal - 4167m
Mulhacen - 3482m

You could work on most ascent in a day but it is hard to keep track of exactly without a GPS.

The saddle across Manaslu, about 5400 metres......

"Manaslu (Nepali:मनास्लु), also known as Kutang) is the eighth highest mountain in the world, and is located in the Mansiri Himal, part of the Nepalese Himalayas, in the west-central part of Nepal. Its name, which means "Mountain of the Spirit", comes from the Sanskrit word Manasa, meaning "intellect" or "soul". Manaslu was first climbed on May 9, 1956 by Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu, members of a Japanese expedition. It is said that "just as the British consider Everest their mountain, Manaslu has always been a Japanese mountain".

What a beautiful mountain Mike!

I'd climb that over Everest any day. Stunning.

Highest summit for me is Ben Nevis, but I had a more spectacular view from Doan last weekend.  Size isn't everything... ;)

5895m - Mt Kilimanjaro then Ben Nevis.

I think I may be the king of this one but I still plan on going higher one day.

As a planned walk it is Donard for me.

Although I did get fed up with the ski-lifts being 'windied-off' (again) and no snow low-down one year on Cairngorm, so we walked up the pistes in our ski-boots and carrying our skis and poles.  That got us up to the Ptarmigan restaurant at 1097m.  Incidently I have learnt tonight that this is the highest restaurant in the UK.  I didn't appreciate that at the time, and I brought a packed lunch 8)

I'm planning 'the Ben' this summer.
