Antrim Hills
« on: March 23, 2010 »

Hi all,

I was just wondering what is the general situation with access on the antrim hills?

Can you pretty much walk anywhere over a certain height? I know there are certain access routes like moyle way + antrim hills way but what about the rest?

cheers

Andy

I'm not sure what the rules are but I know we were tramping all over the place at the weekend without any issues.

Not sure but Chris and the chaps took alot of grief from a grumpy yokel around the Mournes at the weekend so just because you're in an area that appears to be public doesn't necessarily mean it is.

yeah i read that! lol

What can someone really do if they catch u walking across a remote field? all you can do is apologise and pretend u didn't realise it was private!
i mean as long as ur not walking around close to someones house, leaving gates open or damaging fences i cant see what the problem is.

It's not my area of expertise but as far as I'm aware trespassing a civil matter so as long as you're not doing anything criminal I think landowners options are limited.

I think j's right. As far as I know tresspassing is a cival matter. Once it becomes criminal damage then thats another matter. This may be a lie I've concocted over the years to justify my rambling tho, I'm sure it would do no harm to look into it. Would have been nice to know excatly what my rights were and where I stood with that farmer.

know a few farmers are a bit overprotective at the moment due to lambing season so I always try to stay away from fields with the sheep in them one bad experince with an irrate farmer with shotgun in Donegal and I learnt my lesson . It may seem remote but you never no wats round the next corner :)
