Adult swimming lessons?
« on: June 27, 2013 »

Figured it's about time I sorted this issue as my swimming skills are less than useless. Had a ring round of my local leisure centers and such and they are about as much help as my lifeguarding ability. Seems that if you are under 8 then there are tons of classes but nothing more.

I live up in derry and really don't want to have to drive for that long for a half hour/hour class each week, but does anyone know of anywhere that offers weekly classes at a reasonable rate?

I can't imagine there isn't a service available for adults, seems like the local council leisure centers are failing a bit of they can't run a class. Maybe you could get in contact with some student type who lifeguards at your local pool who might give you one on one lessons for a reasonable fee. You wouldn't need many lessons before you'd be good to go on your own and it would just be a matter of practice.

Not sure if this would be any help or too far but I was up staying in the Roe Valley hotel in Limavady at  the weekend and they had notices up in the pool area offering swimming lessons for all ages.

I agree. Go one to one. Much quicker to bring on your technique in the water. I have done a few and usually after 3-6 your stroke is much improved. As long as you can put your face in the water without holding your nose and have some sort of swimming ability it's very quick to coach a stroke.

What about trying the sports centre at the Magee University of Ulster campus?

Thanks for the tips folks there was a couple of ideas there I hadn't thought of. Hunter if your friend says yes that would be perfect as I'm chomping at the bit to get into something with boats/kayaks/canoes but just want to get myself some confidence in the water first.
