wild camping
« on: July 06, 2010 »

hi folks
having done a few 'luxury' camps, hoping to head off soon on first wild camp with my good lady.  Any tips on 'coping' but more importantly, where to go would be much appreciated.  We are looking at the mournes but happy to consider the sperrins/north coast
Cheers

Try on the trassey river for your first night. You park your car at Meelmore Lodge and walk up the Brandy Pad.

Depends on how wild and how far you want to go + how light your gear is. We have had some awesome summit camps - top of Bearnagh is a real favourite but obviously you have to hump your stuff to the top of a peak. Annalong Wood and Donard Wood are great spots too if you want to light a fire but they're closer to civilization and tend to be busier.

Agree with Lenny & J - All the spots (trassey, ananlog, donard wood) mentioned are a good starting point (and ones used regularly by folks of all levels). Trassey river has the extra benifit of being not far away from Meelmore Lodge itself, means if stuff doesn't go to plan, you can retire to Meelmore Lodge and take advantage of their cafe/showers/toilets/flat pitches :)

(My dad and I did Trassey Track for his first wild camp (in years) a while back)
