sounds like a resounding  'no' then!

I usually just nip out when I get an hour, so I never know much in advance if I'm going.
You could try the MTBRider forum,  http://www.mtbrider.com/forumdisplay.php?4-Rides

yeah its pretty much done but i haven't changed the forks yet i'm waiting on decent set at a good price off e-bay. I bought my self a jump bike for for off road its great crack.

I,ve had a few close calls, one we woman walking her dog round the lakes mtb trail nearly got put into the hedge.

Do you know much about disc brakes Jon?

I've had a few close calls round the Lakes as well!  It's a bit irritating, as there is plenty of walking around the Lakes but it seems they like to use the MTB trails!

I've hydraulic disc brakes on my current bike, although they are low end OEM Shimano ones and I'm not impressed with them.  In the past I have had a set of Shimano XT hydraulics and they were excellent.  For XC/All Mountain type use I'd look at Shimano Deore/XT or Avid Juicy 3/5's.  I definitely wouldnt waste my time with mechanical disc brakes though which operate on a cable pull.  I found them heavy and less efficient at braking than a good set of V-brakes.

My front brake is mechanical disc and they are crap. My back brake is a v brake and are excellent, i don't see why they don't use the same for back and front.

I get a bad rubbing sound from the disc as well were the pad rubs off the disc, i'm jumping off and whipping the wheel off trying to allign(can't spell) it better. Its a pain in the ass.

front brakes provide 70% of the braking force, so they put the discs on there.
back brakes 30% and Vs are so much cheaper.  Same reason low-end cars have discs on the front and drums at the back.

I've a couple of bikes with decent V-brakes and for riding on the road they're more than adequate,
but my mountain bike has mechanical discs.  very fiddly to adjust and they always need adjusted after taking the wheels off, but they've got so much more stopping power it's worth the hassle.  I rode a bike for a while with hydraulic discs, but for me who's only an intermediate sort of rider they don't give a significant advantage.

I tend to head round Cairnwood now and again. Give me a shout if you want to tag along.
