Change of plan.... Going to head up on Monday now! I'm chewing at the bit to get up there and Big Dod has to have his teeth whitened on Wednesday.  ;D ;D ;D

Mourne Mountain Rescue Team on Facebake - "Crampons and axes essential as conditions underfoot are treacherous."

Now, I've neither crampons nor axe so I'll see how it goes on the day.
If your crampons did give on a sheet of ice and you slid for a bit - in those conditions a helmet might be in order too.
Might bump your head and end up damaging a bit of the mourne wall  :D

Up donard is hard enough going in perfect conditions.
With my pack - harder still.
In the weather we have now even without a rucksack, wee bit hairy..

Then theres possible avalanches and yeti's to think about.. :)

When i was heading up to the Mourne Wall on wednesday i met a hiker, John, coming back down wearing his crampons and carrying an ice axe, he was the picture of worn out happiness. Up at the wall i watched 3 students sliding down on their arses from Donard summit, each to their own.

i slid the whole way from the summit to the saddle on my arse practising ice axe arrests, was funny when i came over the hill quite fast and about 20 walkers suddenly stopped and stared thinking i wasn't going to stop  :)  my thigh is quite sore today as there lots of icy patches uinder the snow and i took a bit of a battering  :(

As I think it'd be too much hassle pitching a tent on Donard just now may head to Sprinkwee with a load of fire logs, camera and a bottle or Redbreast :)

But, thinking it may have gathered a fair bit of snow down in there.

Anyone been that way in the past few days?

Cheers,
Geo...

( Heads off to buy firelogs anyway  ;) )

I've spotted a potentially nice window in the weather for a decent camp this upcoming Monday to Wednesday.

I was thinking of heading to Slieve Bernagh to attempt a summit camp, with the fallback plan being a low level camp at the northern tip of Ben Crom reservoir or hares gap.

It will be on either Monday or Tuesday night and company would be appreciated - otherwise I'll either go with the fall back plan or stick to the woods (though my last two camps have been forest ones and I'm craving some altitude).
