Title: Mourne Seven Sevens 2013 (10th August)
Post by: phil_b on March 10, 2013
Anyone else doing it this year? And any tips you can give myself and the brother , we are doing it this year for the first time. We intend doing Donard, Comedagh, Beg, Cove Lamagan,Binnian, Ben Crom Dam, Meelbeg, Meelmore and Bearnagh.
I have done most of the route over the last few months,  I just need to build up the miles now. Hoping to do a good 14 or 15 miles next sunday taking in 5 of the main 7 if anyone wants to join me.
We are doing it for Cancer Research by the way, our family has been effected by cancer a couple of times and they do good work

That's the route the runners have to take. Maybe you're running, but walkers can go any way they like. All the ascents are easier this way I think.
Water is the main concern on the route, as after the Glen River, you don't see much. There are a sometimes streams on the cove-lamagan path, the Ben Crom river, and then the streams crossing the Brandy Pad.
Last year started raining, but the sun came out and it was scorching. I only drank 1.5 L in 6 hours and paid dearly... got a chest infection the next week I was so run down. I'd normally down that in 2hrs running in the summer.

Navigation isn't really much of a problem if you are familiar with the mountains. Getting the best line off Commedagh to hit the saddle spot on and not coming down on the Castles is just a matter of a compass reading. I followed some guys coming off Binnian but they went straight down the side and it was too slow for my ability, probably better to track all the way back to the path and follow it down to the dam. Otherwise follow the Ben Crom river track then aim straight up the side of Meelbeg to the summit and follow the wall/Brandy Pad the rest of the way.
You also have the choice of routes ascending Donard at the start. We followed various tracks that kept us on the right of the river all the way up to the Ice House... the new trail makes easy going up the valley but you have steeper /longer climb at the end. I went up the Black Stairs which is more gradual, but clambery in parts.

Otherwise, just take the minimum requirements that the organisers (and you) are happy with.
Was the toughest thing I did last year, and that includes 2 ultra-marathons!
Sounds like your training is all in hand anyway... enjoy it  :)

Hi. Definitely not running, maybe not even walking! It might be a crawl towards the end. I think I have read your account of last years somewhere along with a load of others. From reading up and talking to people I thought it sounded better this way. Did you follow the path over beg and cove to lamagan? I have seen someone mentioning going right around beg and cove and not summiting them. Im hoping to do the descent from comedagh tomthe brandy pad this weekend and also from ben crom dam up to meelbeg, I have done it down a couple of times. I had thought of stashing a couple of litres of water somewhere around ben crom dam to pick up on the way through.

Hi phil, the stewards for the walk will have a bucket on a rope that you can use to get water from the dam, they had this last year and was a good help.

Ah, that would be a good help too. We are not at all concerned with our times round this, just as long as we make it to the dam for 2.30 before the cut off point and then to the finish.

Yeah, as soon as you start up Beg a bit veer to the right and contour around... there are a few trails that'll you'll happen upon. There were runners around me so it was easy to tell when someone had found it as you saw their searching scamper settle back to a jog   ;)

Hi everyone, I'm the brother!
Every time I think, "yes I can do it" I hear or read something like that stated above, ie "third time and hopefully I'll finish it this time" and "worse than two ultra marathons". Philip this could be bad idea! 11 miles last Thursday over just Donard and Commadagh and I nearly died. Hopefully clock a few more miles on Thursday morning.

LOL - well, I was running to get the best time possible so busted myself and only had an 800ml water bottle.
You can go as hard as you like, but I felt pushing hard here took more of a toll than some other events...maybe that's a better way to put it, so not to put you off  ;D

I'm entering the run this year. Will get up in the Mournes on some longer runs when the days get a bit longer.

I think the best training will be as many of these as possible http://www.nimra.org.uk/index.php/fixtures/ (http://www.nimra.org.uk/index.php/fixtures/)

7 7's training this weekend, weather is looking good for Sunday morning. Aiming to do trassey track to hares gap, slievenaglogh, corragh, comedagh, lamagan, ben crom dam, meelbeg, meelmore and bernagh if I can manage it. Leaving trassey car park at 6am hoping to get a bit of height for a nice sunrise if anyone wants to noin me ;D

You are right about the forecast, every time I check it, it looks worse. Yesterday it said it would be dry till after 12, now its wet from 9. As photography is my main reason for walking I might pospone until monday or next weekend. Walking in rain and cloud all day where you cant see 20 meters in front of you just doesnt appeal.

@Phil: yes it looked grotty on paper, but it's fine below the cloud (500/600m). Cold but dry. I'm even seeing sun over on Slieve Croob from my spot on millstone mountain.

me and my hubby are gonna give it a go this year . we're down all this week testing out our endurance . clocked up 11 miles yesterday from carrick little through annalong valley up to the castles then back over beg, cove , lamagan and binnian. at a leisurely pace with only couple stops it took 8 hours . am pretty confident we can cover the distance but still need a trial run to see if we can hit the dam by the designated time. our route.....donard ,Commedagh , bearnagh ,meelmore ,meelbeg, binnian , lamagan and back to the saddle via cove.anyone got any tips or advice on our chosen route ??
Title: Re: Mourne Seven Sevens 2013
Post by: twentyclicks on April 25, 2013
Not really. That's a popular route. Some will follow the wall down off Commedagh to Hare's Gap (can top-up water from the pipe), and some will drop off the summit straight S to get onto the Brandy Pad (can top-up water from the streams that cross it)...there is no trail here so you want to be confident descending steepish rough ground, and navigating by compass or you might drop into the Castles cliffs.

The runners have to do this as, after Commedagh, we do the other mountains in the opposite direction (not much water anywhere until Ben Crom).

If you are walking you can start at any time from 7am I think, so making the cut-off should be fine. Just get an idea how long it might take you from your training and add a margin of error: should give you an idea when to start.

Post by: bbmcg on April 25, 2013
i def prefer the idea of following wall off commedagh down to hares gap so ill maybe time that section tmw . any advice for coming off meelbeg to the dam . havent been that way at all yet but hoping to explore today if this rain eases up
Title: Re: Mourne Seven Sevens 2013
Post by: twentyclicks on April 25, 2013
Personally I just take a bearing from the summit to the crook in the Ben Crom River where it turns more South, and just follow that. The side of Meelbeg is pretty constant steepness, and although there are no paths down through the heather it is usually manageable. Once you cross the peat hags/bog and reach the river you should pick up a trail running along the East side of the river. Somewhere around the 300m contour it will veer over the shoulder of Ben Crom mountain and there is a diagonal track ENE down to the dam.

I did a good walk this morning as more training for this, gps measured it as 27.7k and 2400 meters ascent. Took in 6 summits and covered the last couple of bits of the route that I hadnt done before. I thought the walk from Ben Crom dam to the summit of Meelbeg was worse, not too bad this morning, did it in 1 hour 10 mins. Legs sore now.

Did trial run of our route on Tuesday . Gorgeous day for it. The aim was to see if we could hit Ben crom on time. We skipped donard and went straight up commedagh and followed the wall along to hares gap . Didn't feel this took any longer than dropping down to the brandy pad to reach the gap so gonna go with this on the day to avoid any errors . Onwards and upwards over bearnagh , meelmore and meelbeg . Didn't find the drop off the side of meelbeg too bad nor the peaty  bog as long as you've your waterproof boots on. We then followed the river down a bit and headed over the shoulder of Ben crom. The next bit down to the dam i wasn't too stuck on......i found it very steep and heathery and bouldery  and slow. We came down almost level with the dam. Hubby thinks we should have come down from higher up as it was more bouldery and he thinks it would have been easier to climb down through than the heather. I think I'd have preferred to go lower but would love to hear any suggestions ????  The last time we did it we came too low and I'd bother crossing the river down from the dam.

Anyway the good news is we made it to the dam in 6.5 hours so with the addition of donard on the big day, we now know we'll make it before the 2:30 cut off time  without my husband forcing me to walk faster than I'm comfortable with  ;D

For our trial run we also left out binnian so once we'd climbed up from the dam we started the slog up lamagan . And what a slog it was...........seemed to go on for ever and ever and running out of water didn't help. Forgot to top up at dam !!! Found a path to skirt round cove but can anyone advise if we could have skirted round beg too ?

Back to the saddle and back down the glen river path we made it to the car after 11 hours. 2 very weary and sore hikers who were really chuffed with ourselves that we covered the distance. Looking forward now to the full challenge in Aug . Does anyone know if you've to finish the whole thing by a certain time on the day ?
Title: Re: Mourne Seven Sevens 2013
Post by: twentyclicks on May 31, 2013
See my post above - there is a track down to the dam. If you're lucky on the day you'll see others going up and down it or, once you're in the area, contour horizontally until you hit it.
Anything around Beg is probably just animal tracks, it's hardly worth the bother trying to pick them up. When we were running the other way over it we contoured but it was a hive-mind type situation, I doubt I'd be any quicker on my own trying it.

I think the only cut-off is at the dam, but walkers can start from as early as 7am.

Hi Brenda. There is a clear well defined track from Ben Crom Dam up and across the bog to the river. I was up it 2 weeks ago and down it today. If you are not sure where it is go across the dam and try following it up, it is easy to find going that way. It brings you around the shoulder of Ben Crom and drops fairly steeply down to the reservoir, if you end up below the level of the dam, you are much too low.

Did just over 13 miles today as training for the Seven Sevens. We left the carpark on the Trassey Road, up the Trassey track to Hares Gap, over Bernagh, Meelmore, Meelbeg, Slieve Loughshannagh, Doan, down to Ben Crom Dam and along the edge of the reservoir and back up the valley to Hares Gap and back to the car. Hoping to get another 3 or 4 of these in before the end of July.

Well who all did it and how did you do?

I chickened out to save my sore foot from getting worse, instead I did the Zero Sevens, where I touched each of the 7 mountains but stayed as low as possible, still took 4.5hrs to cover 22km, absolutely wrecked me so I was right not to tackle the 7 7s as I should really have done more long distance training. Strangely enough, my sore foot almost feels ok now  ;D (rest of my body is in trouble though  :( )

And never mind the bloody seven sevens ofnthe airshow, could someone tell me why they both had to be held on the same day? From we left the compeditors car park to Bryansford took almost 2  hours, traffic was at a complete standstill. Almost 3 hours to get home, I did it in 45 mins this morning going up. Was a really terrible end to a great day out and I will never do the event again if they are both on the same day :-[

Trick is to book a table in a nice restaurant for when you finish so you relax while everyone else struggles with traffic, although we tried this today and had to cancel the booking as the airshow was delayed  :(

Thanks Phil, you must be pleased with your time. I was the one bickering with her husband the whole way round lol. Him ---- Brenda ,hurry up........Me ---- it's not a race ya know, I'm going as fast as i can !!!  :D the thoughts of ever having to cross that bog after meelbeg again would put me off it but I'll never say never. Though like yourself i do fancy the mourne wall challenge ;)

Hmmm, I wonder if you were the couple that led me along the boggy route off Meelbeg to the Ben Crom river (I was in grey trousers and black tshirt with black x-race rucksack)
