Meteor Showers - 12th August 2011
« on: August 04, 2011 »

Quote
Perseid meteor shower peak
August 12, 2011
i

The maximum of the Perseid activity in 2011 is expected during the night of the 12th August 2011. The Perseids is the name of a prolific meteor shower. The shower is visible from mid-July each year, with the peak in activity being between August 9 and 14, depending on the particular location of the stream. During the peak, the rate of meteors reaches 60 or more per hour.

They can be seen all across the sky, but because of the path of Swift-Tuttle's orbit, Perseids are primarily visible in the northern hemisphere. As with all meteor showers, the rate is greatest in the pre-dawn hours, since the side of the Earth nearest to turning into the sun scoops up more meteors as the Earth moves through space.

The visible path of a meteoroid that enters Earth's atmosphere is called a meteor, or colloquially a shooting star or falling star. A meteor shower is a celestial event in which a number of meteors are observed to radiate from one point in the night sky. These meteors are caused by streams of cosmic debris called meteoroids entering Earth's atmosphere at extremely high speeds on parallel trajectories. Most meteors are smaller than a grain of sand, so almost all of them disintegrate and never hit the Earth's surface. (From: Wikipedia, license: CCA-SA)

Sounds like a good night for a bivvy  ;)

I chickened out of this one  :'( few things went wrong, forgot to pack a rollmat, but worts of all I forgot to charge the camera battery and I had planned to bring the tripod up and get lots of long exposure shots. Went for a wee walk anyway to get a few geocaches, now sitting on side of meelmore at and old quarrymans hut with a stream trickling beside me while watching the sun set. Would be idyllic if it wasn't so cold and windy ;D
