Is it possible to walk from Black Mountain across to Cave Hill?

Not really, if you mean without crossing roads, from what I know I think Ligoniel is between them, You could walk up round behind Ligoniel though  :)

I spoke to the leader of a local walking/hiking club about this, and they were said that there was an organised even in the past where people would walk the whole of the belfast hills.  BUT, apparently the farmers got stroppy about so many people walking across their land.  It may be that individuals are a bit more welcome still; not sure.  I gather that some farmers are keen, and others are keen to threaten you (or your dog) with a shotgun.  If you can find a (relatively) ancient path (such as the ulster way) that happens to cross someone's land, then it might lend a bit of legitimacy to your cause, and help the farmer to understand that you have some right to be there.

Thats the trouble when you want to walk places that you aren't experienced with. It can be hard to tell who's land you are on and always run the risk of some grumpy country type giving you a hard time.
