Title: TGO Challenge - 11-25th May 2012
Post by: LennyJ1 on September 02, 2011
As my idea of Hadrians wall is falling on deaf ears. Is anyone planing on taking part in the TGO Challenge next year? I have the application form so no need to buy TGO this month. Would love to share the load with someone.

is there a website with more info and dates? although if i couldn't get the time to do hadrians wall then not much chance of doing the tgo challenge  :(

Were you thinking along the lines of a group lenny? its 1-4 isnt it?

Thats what I was thinking. 2 or 4 people would be great. share tents and food and other stuff.

Liam its 11-25th May 2012 (not take this long but the dates to complete), cost is £30 per person.

I have all the details in this months issue.

Sweet, cool, excellent. We will have to get together to chat about it further.

Also not 100% sure but I think Suspet is wantint to go again.

If anyone has applied to do the TGOC next year, thay have put on there website msg board that they have over 350 applications and there will be a draw  >:(. Keep your fingers crossed flip
Title: Re: TGO Challenge
Post by: suspectmonkey on October 14, 2011
Well if it makes you feel any better your odds in the draw have improved already... it looks like Kat and I won't be able to go :(  I've only recently found out Im starting a new job soon, so really cant commit to taking 2 1/2 weeks off at this early stage.  Kat has also ended up getting work so it looks even less likely she will be available in May.  Of course its great news that we are both being kept busy with work, but at the same time I'm gutted I can't do the TGOC and make up for last years dissappointing effort!

Best of luck getting on guys, if theres anything I can do to help at the planning stage let me know, will be more than happy to help out :)

Gonna have to think up a fresh challenge for the new year that can be done over a weekend... mountain marathon anyone?

Dave and LJ,

why don't you just let your respective partners do the planning for this event?  They're seemingly much more adept at that sort of thing and it would give them an element of control over you? :-X  Just admit they know better and you'll be fine.  ???;D

Need to pull my hair out. This is all my gear without food and water and weighs 9g over 9kg. Do you think it may be to heavy?
Title: Re: TGO Challenge
Post by: Mourneman on December 30, 2011
kilograms are beyond me Lenny,think it's 9 kg kg = 19.8416 lb,so allowing for food,water,for a weekender,that's about 25 lb or 11.3398 kg,which i think is very good,is that a jetboil you're using,ps nice kit
Title: Re: TGO Challenge

Thanks, Yes its the Jetboil Zip. Only weights 395g which is good for you cooker, stand, pot with lid and a bowl. I have reviewed it on my website (Link Below)

Garmin Dakota 10 - 158g  ;D

Is that your new bag?
Title: Re: TGO Challenge
Post by: twentyclicks on December 30, 2011
Is that including the stuff you'll be wearing, or is that all spare clothes?

Swap the tub of Vaseline for a chapstick will save you those 9g, and the handle on that toothbrush is looking very excessive  ;)  (admittedly, I can't bring myself to chop my adventure toothbrush)

Can't you employ a couple of East Scottish Sherpa's?  ;)

I'm sure you could pay them in Buckfast and Irn Bru  ;D

Is that your new bag?

Yes, I am in the middle of packing it now to see how it gets on.

Is that including the stuff you'll be wearing, or is that all spare clothes?

In the clothing I have a waterproof jacket & Trousers, Down Jacket, Softshell Jacket (I was going to take my primaloft but softshell seems more sensible), softshell trousers, base layer, long johns & Socks. I will be wearing another pair of trousers, base layer, socks, pants & Boots (All not included into 9kg weight). And the reason for the tub of vasaline is its  more for rubbing in special areas.

All sorted gear wise also, just need to buy some more food and parcel it off to the forward locations, Dave is sorting out the maps and I have to get the train tickets and then we are all squared away to go.

I have been walking to work and back again with my pack. its only 3 miles but any effort is better than no effort. Also been cycling and playing football to try and keep a fitness level.

Excitement must be building now guys!  I'm sure you've posted this somewhere and I probably missed it on my 'sabbatical' but what is the rough route you went for?  Where are you starting and finishing?
Title: Re: TGO Challenge
Post by: LennyJ1 on April 16, 2012
We are starting in Mallaigthen heading towards Fort Augusus. From there going across the monalaigth to Aviemore. Over Ban Macadui into Braemar onto jocks road to Brechin then finish in Montrose.

Sorry about the spelling
Title: Re: TGO Challenge
Post by: suspectmonkey on April 16, 2012
Are you arriving in Mallaig on the late train?  If you haven't already booked I would highly recommend staying in Mallaig Backpackers (http://www.mallaigbackpackers.co.uk/) overnight.  Its a good place to bed down for the night if you don't fancy trying to find the wild camping pitch near the antennae :)  Also, there is a handy Co-Op across the street to stock up on last minute supplies, and you are only a couple of minutes from where you buy the boat ticket and where you check out.  Route from Fort Augustus seems like a good choice, think its a better idea than heading Fort William direction.  Where are you spending your first night?

Wouldn't worry about the spellings... I find its the pronunciations that always cause the problems :D

All the best guys, you're going to have a fantastic time and the craic will be mighty from the minute you step on board the train from Glasgow!  You both have done loads of prep so there's nothing left to do but enjoy it :)  Can we track your progress anywhere?  Are you going to link your Spot Messenger up with a service like Social Hiking?

I had a laugh at your photo Dave with the food portioned out.  Looked rather familiar to me...

I hate to tell you all but I have had to pull out as last week I pulled my musles in my lower back training.

Dave knew that it happened sraight away and that I was waiting to speak to the doctor this morning.

She did advise me not to go as I could do more injury, so I am not going anymore.

I feel really shitty dropping out last minute and dave knows this also.

I'm sorry to hear that Lenny. Must be heart breaking.

Is the mission now cancelled for both of you or is Dave carrying on himself?

Oh no!  :( Really disappointed for you Lenny (& Dave), that's gutting so close to the event.

As bad as it feels now, I'm sure you've made the right decision though.  If you feel bad when you're away somewhere, the only thing you want to do is get home.

Man up Lenny... It's only a pulled muscle, not a slipped disc.

Paracodol and Scotch will get you through... Trust me, I'm a Doctor  ;)

I just got an email from adventure trading telling me they can still add me to the TGOC 2012 crossing map they host.

It doesn't look like its refreshed from last year yet but you'll be looking for a Dave F if they keep he current format.

Looks like he's making good progress!

Hi Guys,

I was chatting with Dave today via text / email and he asked me to upload any pictures he sends me onto this forum thread so here goes. Other pics will follow as and when I receive them.

He said the hostel was fine last night and that the guys he had met so far are great. He also said it was "baltic" this morning & that he dropped his sisters camera on the ferry and it's banjo'd :( so it looks like the iphone is his only camera now. Fingers crossed he took the extra charger over with him !!

Managed to get in touch with Dave tonight via text.

It looked like he had to back track some when I was checking the map updates on-line etc. so I asked him what had happened. He said it was because he 'couldn't cross the river, it was mental today'
He also said he was 'totaly fooked ATM' and that he was about to 'woof a couple of co coda mol and sleep'

I have been keep an eye on his progress via the SPOT Tracker maps all weekend, he is going well atm but a long long way to go.

Never fun having to back track, but then it wouldn't be a challenge if there weren't obstacles to over come!  They say the third day is the toughest mentally (I wouldn't know, I didn't make it that far!) so hopefully he gets a good start to this week and finds some where to have a well deserved hot meal and whisky ;)  Keep 'er lit Dave!

Text from Dave this morning, after I asked him about his back-track.

"Last night was literally the first time I've had phone signal. Jet boil is great. I was ready to pack it in last night was totally f**ked. I had started towards river crossing and a group that had camped at it had came back saying it looked dangerous and there was three of them so had to back track and do shit loads of road walking. Was zoned out and missed the bridge over to the other side of loch Garry and I really didn't want to back track again. No idea how far I walked yesterday. Still to get up but feel much better although I've a few blisters. The weather was mental think the time I walked the Brandy Pad with Lenny except wetter and stronger winds :( its still raining but only sounds like showers. I dropped my sisters camera on the ferry !! and its banjo'd :( so iphone pics the whole way. Think I've about 7 mile to do today going to try and take it easy. My boots leaking like sieves too I could never tell if they where or it was sweat but they deffo leaking the walking action must open something up as I had them in a basin and they seemed fine"

I think asked him if he thought he would be able to finish the TGO Challenge,

"I honestly no idea :-/ was seriously ready to quit last night, really didnt think I had it in me to do another day never mind finish. Turned my phone on and loads of well wishing texts and talking to Jean really helped. Before I couldnt care but after it I felt more determined. She said my dads obsessed with tracking me he takes every point and maps it properly along the track instead of a line from one to another :) she went for dinner there yesterday and said it was updates the whole day lol. I'll get to Fort Augustus today and see how I feel."

"lol at one point I had to run up the road a bit. I heard this creaking and looked around and saw this huge beech tree limb ready to fall on top of me! It was all cracked at the trunk I'm sure its down by now."

Hi Dave,

Hope your getting all these messages  :)

You will be an NI-Wild Legend when (not if) you complete this TGO Challenge 2012.

Just take your time, enjoy some of the most amazing scenery in the world, enjoy your grub and enjoy your rest.

When you cross that finish line you will feel like you've conquered the world and just think of the stories you will have for around the campfire.  Can't wait to hear them dude!!!  ;)

There is nothing worse Dave than sore feet, you've done the right thing..
You could have done more damage to your knee if you had of continued. My knee is still giving me jip from last month's day in the hills, I ended up buying a really expensive knee support and tablets to help in its healing.
There is always next year.. and if you are allowed you can always join us in Connemara in August!

I typed a reply there, but it doesn't appear to have posted... second time lucky!

Really sorry to hear you had to withdraw from the Challenge Dave :(  With the poor weather and the high mileage on Sunday it sounds like you really had your work cut out for you!  No shame in having to withdraw, it was the sensible thing to do given the circumstances, and you still did a darned good distance in the Highlands!

You know what this means Dave... you and me will have to enter as a team next year to banish our bad luck ;)

Dave, sorry to learn of your misfortunes.  I hope that you have a boring, uneventful journey back home.  After some TLC and time to reflect perhaps you'll be able to accept that your decision, albeit a forced one was the correct one, for you and others.
Your achievement in any event cannot be underestimated, you are alive, a little bruised, physically and no douibt emotionally but otherwise in one piece.  Well done.

I look forward to meeting with you again soon.

Regards,

George

I totally didn't get the training walks that I wanted to get under my belt done, life just took over and the next thing it was time to go so that definitely played a role too.

Yeah, the training always gets way-laid  :-\  Mike and I were just lucky last Sept that we'd done a lot of training earlier in the year as we hardly got any done the 2 months before the GR20.
I'd recommend starting before even entering, as it's never going to waste even if you don't make the lotto pick. Strength work also really pays off as a quick way to reduce injury risk... like that 'Conditioning for Hillwalkers' book mentioned (I'm more writing this to remind myself of it and others looking at this thread in the future)

and hopefully I will remember the things about route planning, maps, weight and accommodation that became obvious when there but not so much before.
Yes, hopefully... these nuggets have been very hard earned & will be invaluable to any of us planning similar endeavours down the line!  :D

Sorry to hear Dave that you had to pull out.  As others have been saying, maybe it was better to pull out then, rather to be pulled out by someone else.

Even though you didn't complete it, what you will be bringing back is more valuable than anything else.

Do you have any more pictures than what has been posted already?  Would definitely love to see more, and hear more.
