Slieve Donard, Newcastle

Wouldn’t it be refreshing to get back to nature, even for a while, and immerse yourself completely in the peace and stunning natural beauty of the mountains? Wouldn’t it be even better if you could do this, and help to raise funds to support the physical and mental well-being of young people at the same time?

Hostelling International Northern Ireland (HINI) are pioneering a trek on Saturday 6th June 2009 at Slieve Donard, the highest peak in Northern Ireland, to secure the future physical and mental well-being of many young people in Northern Ireland.

The hike will begin in Donard Park, heading towards the mountain and following the Glen River uphill through stunning old woodland of Scots Pine, Oak and Birch. Walkers can then cross the stile and follow the track above the river for about 2kms, heading towards the ‘Saddle’ between the magnificent Donard and Commedagh.
At this point, the path will cross the river and continue uphill to the 'Saddle' where it will meet the Mourne Wall, where walkers will follow the wall steeply uphill towards the summit. On a clear day, this gives spectacular views of the Isle of Man, Wicklow, Donegal, Wales and Scotland. From the summit, walkers will return by the same route, covering a total distance of 5.5 miles.

Due to the nature of the proposed route, this particular challenge is not recommended for anyone under the age of 10. The terrain is on rough forest and mountain tracks, which is steep in places, with parts of the steep mountain section paved with stone, but is well within the capabilities of any healthy adult. Trained safety marshals will be located at various points along the proposed route, so you can enjoy the landscape and beautiful backdrop safe in the knowledge that you are in very capable hands.

VALVE intend to set up a Trust Fund with the money raised from this trek, which will be used to support these Government initiatives and give young people of all ages the chance to explore the great outdoors and get back to nature and the countryside, with the support of Hostelling International Northern Ireland. If this sounds like a future worth investing in, we would love your support in realising this.

The registration fee for the “Donard Blazing Trails 2009” initiative is £10, and we would ask that participants secure a minimum sponsorship of £20. As interest in this event is expected to be keen, we would recommend that you register early to secure your place in this exciting and challenging day. Following your arrival, check-in will be completed in the car park at Slieve Donard, and then, at your own pace, you can enjoy the great outdoors with the knowledge that every step you are taking will have a lasting and optimistic outcome.

The walk will be managed on the ground by the Highpoint Group, a successful adventure management company based in County Down, and we are indebted to Cotswold Outdoor Store and Antrim Hills Spring Water Company for their generous support towards this event.

Newcastle in County Down is home to a stunning array of natural beauty spots, set beautifully against the backdrop of the magnificent Mourne Mountains. While in the area, there is much to explore, including Dundrum Castle, Tollymore Forest Park and Newcastle and Murlough beach. Consequently, while you are here, you can easily extend your stay at our established youth hostel based at the foot of the Mourne Mountains.

So what are you waiting for!
We look forward to hearing from you, and, as ever, are grateful for your continued support.
