Self build canoe kit
« on: March 27, 2012 »

Anyone any experience with building a boat from scratch? I've been thinking of it for a while now and came across this website http://www.fyneboatkits.co.uk/.  Thinking of the canadian canoe. Mainly to be used for slow river paddling with the kids and the occasional trip to Coney island.  Not sure which boat would be best for this type of paddling. Anyone any advice? Thanks

Simon on the forum (Northern Focus site) has been building a canoe from scratch. Not sure what stage he is at, but I'm sure you can contact him about it.

And there's a very handy carpenter chap on here who made a very fine canoe a while back. Think it was in the For Sale section.

From looking at the pictures and the plans briefly, the kit is the way to go. It looks fairly easy to assemble but I suppose it is relying on the builder having some manufacturing experience. If you go down the route of building the kit, make sure you double the number of hand clamps and g cramps as you can never have something too well held in place while the glue sets.

just in case you've somehow missed the self build section on the Song of the Paddle forum...

I'd love to make a skin on frame canoe sometime.

With work and stuff it's been laid up over the winter, but the longer evenings are coming and I should be getting it finished soon. Happy to pass on any experience and advice! The link that DryBag posted is an excellent place to go for advice too.
