Lecale Way?
« on: September 23, 2012 »

Hi, Just wondering if any of you have walked the Lecale way. Does anyone know if it is predominantly off road path0 or roads etc. I have looked on the walk ni website but the information is pretty vague. Also does anyone know if there is anywhere quiet to camp near the Newcastle end, Murlough bay perhaps. wouldn't be using a tent probably just a bivvy bag or tarp.
Thanks in advance for any help.

If it hasn't been walked already, there has certainly been quite a bit of talk about it before on the forum. You should find some old threads.
If you're bivvying by yourself you should be able to sneak a night anywhere. If you leave no trace there'll be no harm done even if it's not technically allowed.

We've had this on the books since LandyLiam had a landy but we never actually got around to doing it!!

There's a lot of road involved, most popular place to camp seems to be St Johns Point, it's about half way. I've no idea about Murlough Bay but it's a nature reserve which usually means no camping.

Was thinking of attempting the whole thing in one day and back the next, so we would be travelling pretty light, any idea what the terrain is like so we can get a realistic time for the journey??

afaik you cannot travel across the beach at ballykinler army base, so that whole section has to be done on a very narrow road.
