Title: Lakeside fury
Post by: MG1 on February 02, 2012
Guys i need a partner for CCAR's lakeside fury. My usual partner in crime is busy.

I'll be happy to finish the race and have a laugh along the way, not to serious as long as we don't come last ;D

Its in Craigavon and i  live 5 mins from the starting point, so i know the area really well.

Any takers?

Craigavon area on Saturday 25th February 2012.

Skills needed: running/walking, mountain biking/cycling, orienteering, kayaking, a sense of humour and a dry change of clothes for after ;-)

You won't regret doing it and once you do one you will be back for more.

Don't run just walk it. Make up the time on the bike or kayak. I see teams sprinting off the line and not reading the map and teams that take it easy and read the map pass them by.  We have got some great results from races that the map reading and shortcuts meant we could take it easy.

Doesn't mater if your the fastest team out there. If your going the wrong way your just getting further away from the finish faster ;-)

I could do with stone advice about what to expect, Web site its pretty skimpy on details!

My advice would be don't get caught up in the fast start. Take time to read instructions and maps as best you can. It sometimes feels like you are wasting time stopped to look at a map when others are running off into the distance but if they are going the wrong way then it's better to know your going in the right direction.

Depending on your fitness and how competitive you want to be if you want to make up time then fast transitions are a good way to make up time on others. Eat and drink on the move if you are pushing for a good place.

You will get route instructions and at some point get a map to follow. Read and listen to instructions clearly. Sometimes there is multiple routes so don't follow others even if they look like they are going the right way. Race your own race.

You will be running/walking orienteering, biking and possibly bike orienteering and kayaking. They can come in any order and you will have special tasks to do along the way. The marshalls will instruct you on what to do.

If your just doing it for a bit of fun then just take your time and enjoy it.

Hope that helps? Any questions just shout.

Thanks, that does help.... Just gonna bring a bladder and few cliff bars and take it easy I think... I've only ever done an hour in akayak, but I'm sure it'll probably be dead easy!
I might bring a change of top and shorts in my bag in case I get wet in the kayak...  Or do they give you a wet suit, maybe a small towel could be brought!

Bladder of water or energy drink is good. Gels and bananas are useful. Remember to eat and drink as it sometimes goes so quick you forget. Seen a few people cramping pretty badly who forgot to eat or drink.

You won't get a wetsuit just a life jacket and away you go. The kayak is where lots loose time getting ready. You will probably get wet from splashing and these boats have holes to let water out so your arse will get wet etc or the odd team fall in getting into the kayak but these are sit on tops very hard to tip when you are paddling it's just off balance getting in causes problems. If you want to carry a spare top to change into that's up to you but remember you will be carrying it all day. Mandatory kit list usually has rain wear. You could always change into that for the kayak stage if you want to stay dry. Save you carrying extra clothing.

Definitely bring a change of clothes for after the Race to go home in ;-)

Well hope you ni wild fellas are all rested up now, yous looked like you were having good craic on sat..! I was bringing in the controls from around the lake and think I know why yous missed the one on the water wheel, it was on the metal fence on the back corner where there is no wire fence, when I got there the si box was turned into the inside of the fence so all you could see was the wire it was sucured to not the easiest to spot..! Hope to see yous at the Vikings of Strangford..!
