I have The Book of the Bivvy by Ronald Turnbull if thats the one you mean.
Seems like you can read most of it here:
http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=kCBGaAYpqSQC&dq=book+of+the+bivvy&printsec=frontcover&source=bn&hl=en&ei=ZBdcTO_XN5CTjAeDheXwAw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=6&ved=0CDkQ6AEwBQ#v=onepage&q&f=false (http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=kCBGaAYpqSQC&dq=book+of+the+bivvy&printsec=frontcover&source=bn&hl=en&ei=ZBdcTO_XN5CTjAeDheXwAw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=6&ved=0CDkQ6AEwBQ#v=onepage&q&f=false)

I'm actually reading it at the mo. Its not bad but a bit confusing - part recounting of a story, part instructional. It is quite motivational though.

Will take you up on that offer, as I didn't get round to ordering it this morning after all!

Funny, I just spotted that this afternoon whilst I was ordering a different book from Amazon.  Think with the discount code from Cicerone it works out at £7.50 so Amazon is the cheaper option.  Keep meaning to check in my local library as well, as I've got a few Cicerone guides from there in the past!

Got my copy today and after reading a couple of chapters i'm itching to have a go at bivvying and tonight would be perfect calm one with almost cloudless skies, except its below zero on the hills and i haven't got a bag yet  :'( good read though, first page i opened was about a wet night bivvying in Belfast with scramblers driving past and someone getting murdered in a tent  :o

Wheres the need for eVent or g-tex if you aren't moving? Seems rather excessive!

Because your body still releases moisture when your asleep. If it didn't you could just sleep in a bin bag no problem!

What makes you think its any more expensive than goretex?!

Granted, but surely you're gonna have a big chunk of insulation that will absorb the moisture before the membrane gets a chance to do nout?
Obviously a breathable waterproof material is gonna be better than non breathable, but surely the level of breathability these 'top' fabrics provide is somewhat wasted?
Just a thought?

Think I'd rather buy some material and make my own custom one than spend that amount of money on a g-tex one!

as usual i'm looking at the used market on ebay and plenty of ex army goretex bags at approx £30, only eVent one i've seen was £160  :o

I'm just going by Ronald Turnbulls recommendtions for bags as he's the bivvy daddy  ;)

I've been pretty impressed with the Rab Storm bivvy which can be had for around £50.  Its only slightly heavier than the Alpkit Hunka, but has so much more space inside.  It was certainly breathable when I was zipped fully into it in the rain with only a tiny hole left to breathe through.

The only other bag I really looked at was the Pertex Rab Survival Zone.  I don't think Pertex is as waterproof as the material used in the Rab Storm, but it is meant to be more breathable.  If you are using it under a tarp then I'd go for breathable over waterproof as the tarp acts as a shelter anyway.

Speaking of which... I need a bivvy night... soon :)

I have the Rab ranger and I can not fault it got one good soaking and I stayed dry inside .. No visible signs of any moisture from my breathing etc .
