Title: Testing some new blades
Post by: b0ogaloo on February 07, 2012
I've not been terribly impressed with the spoon knives I've bought , so I decided to make my own
So i had time today to test out a few different designs I've done and took some photos along the way
This is how I carve a spoon.. quite a large serving type spoon in this case .. I wasn't going for an aesthetically pleasing product , just testing the blades

The wood is Rowan or Mountain ash

Split the log

Draw out the rough shape ..note the " rough" :D

Begin roughing out the shape with the axe

Starting to hollow the bowl with the mini adze .. this saves so much time

Roughing out of the bowl complete .. move to the 1st DIY spoon knife , which has a very deep aggressive cut

the second knife I made .. very thin, very very sharp blade , shallow curve great for finishing cuts

bowl nearly complete , back to the axe for some final shaping before cleaning it up with a knife

Using a carving knife now to smooth out the axe work

Nearly done

final bowl cleanup with DIY spoon knife Number 3

Took about 30 mins from start to finish

I don't bother carrying the fingers back .. just leave them where they fall

Although saying that the last one hasn't grown back yet :D

Lovely, I really need to try this again as I enjoyed it my one and only time.

I always think it would be a good thing to do at camp but then I always think it would be a real PITA to have to carry my finger back down the trail lol.
