Sperrins Hillwalking Club
« on: May 05, 2009 »

We are a very active Hillwalking Club based in the heart of the Sperrins in Northern Ireland.  Organised club walks take place twice monthly in the autumn and winter and weekly in the remainder of the year.  Grade 1 walks for the fitter walker alternate with Grade 3 walks for those who prefer a more leisurely stroll. We also have Grade 2 walks - something in between!

The Sperrins are one of the largest and probably the least explored of all the mountain ranges in Ireland.  Stretching for 35 miles the countryside is completely unspoilt and contains some of the most isolated spots in the country.  Its varied landscape makes this region a great place to explore on foot.

While many of our walks are in the Sperrins we also have walks in other parts of Ireland and at least once per year a weekend trip is organised.

Safety on all of our walks is of paramount importance and therefore only suitably qualified and experienced members lead our walks and those who lead the Grade 1 walks have obtained the Walking Group Leader award.

We are affiliated to the Mountaineering Council of Ireland.

To assist us  in our training of guides and to provide the required facilities to maintain our standard of safety we have received funding from Lottery Grants for Local Groups.  This funding has proved invaluable to us.

We welcome new members and would be pleased to explore the possibilities of joint walks in the Sperrins with other clubs in Ireland and the United Kingdom or any other part of the world.

Those who may wish to join our club but are apprehensive because of, for example, a perceived lack of fitness, one of our leaders will be happy to discuss this with them.
