Title: Can you recommend a tent for family wild camping.
Post by: RedLeader on November 03, 2014
I'm after a tent that is light enough to lug into the mountains but that would sleep a couple of adults and a child. I'm thinking my only real requirements are a porch or area to keep gear dry and a design that will be stable enough in wind. I'm guessing everyone realises that decently waterproof is fairly obvious for Northern Ireland ;)

I've my eye on the Vango Pulsar 300 for a while now, about 3.7kg, not bad for a 3 man tent with big porch.

or you could go larger with the Vango Omega 350 at 5.15kg

6Kg is probably a shade more than I would have liked to carry :)

Vango Tempest 300 is only £102 on Millets site at the moment.

I eventually bought the Vango Banshee 300 for £100. Gave it a try last weekend and it was plenty roomy for 2 and I think 3 would be fine as long as at least one was a child. Not a lot of porch space and it was  a bit of a pain to erect but that's the tradeoff for it being 2.75kg. Can be pitched outer first or all as one which is interesting though and not something I've seen much in cheaper tents.

Do you mean outer first or all as one?

It's hard to look past a Banshee for weight, price, and all round good Vango reliability.

My bad, outer first or all as one :) Although I think outer first would be a bit fiddly, I'll need to give it a bit more of a testing. The first use was pitching in the dark which is always a giggle when it's a new tent. Pitch time is supposed to be 7 minutes, more like 70 that time ;)

I have the force 10 vortex 200 and it's one hell of a tent. For your stated needs though you'd probably want the 300 which has extra space. The geodesic design isn't flappy in the wind, which is one of the reasons why I never sleep in a tent in the first place. Might be of benefit if you're gonna have a nipper with you
