Annalong Wood - Dec 09
« on: December 07, 2009 »

We had planned a quick weekender with the kids before Xmas but in the end we only took one small'un. Donard Wood is our normal haunt but since we weren't leaving until teatime Saturday we decided that Annalong would be easier to get to in the dark.

The walk up was hard enough - the paths were flooded and clouds were low leaving us with very limited visibility however you could find Annalong with your eyes closed so it's just a matter of plodding on (make sure to follow forest fence and not the wall or you end up at the top of Binnian ;))

No suprise to see a Hike Lite on an NI-Wild trip. The other is a Vango Banshee 200 which is also highly recommended

A bit of craic round the fire. We were chatting until 430am which is probably why I'm still knackered. Initially we had a few problems getting the fire going as all the deadwood was totally sodden but persevence got us through!

The highlight of the evening - Flambeed kangaroo sausages - they were awesome!

Great views. Shame idiots keep coming up and accidentally setting fire to the place.

The campsite

Breakfast. Bacon and egg rolls never taste as good as when they're cooked in the fresh air!

My den for the night - tents are for Girl Guides ;)

Packed up and ready to go. It's at this point that I really wish I'd remembered that I promised I'd be home by lunch.

I had a really excellent weekend - cheers guys. It was pretty miserable when the rain was on and we were having problems lighting the fire but once we were warmed and the clouds cleared and the moon came out it just made it all the more awesome!

The Meats of the World Stall at the Continental Market at City Hall has all sorts : Ostrich, Alligator, Impala etc. The market is actually a meat or pastry lovers dream - there's loads of excellent food.

We just wanted to try the kids with some colder weather camping and weren't sure how it would turn out so we didn't advertise it. Next time will definitely be a free for all!

We'll have to sort that - untested camping gear is depressing. He honest, you've been in it at the house ;)

I'd be tempted into a quickie the the week before Xmas. Would need to be super good weather for me to take the Canadian over though.
