Do you nutters all have tarps?  I know they have their limitations, particularly in wind, but I can see how they could be useful in a spot of rain.

I'll be bringing a tarp defo... Mine is a reinforced Army issue one (Surprise Surprise) and I pitch it low in high winds.  There's 8 contact points with the ground and I set a decent size rock on top of each peg, so it's going nowhere!

Like this, only with the front pole being set to about 40cm in height and an extra couple of guy lines coming out at 45 degrees:

In really severe gails I peg the thing flat to the ground all the way around and just crawl under.

If it's wet, but not too windy, we can put a couple of tarps together for shelter while we enjoy a few beverages around the fire log.

This camp definitely has the potential to be a tad challenging  :o

I'm keen to explore an area of the Mournes that I have never tread before to get to our Bullseye Bivvy site on Saturday.

I'm considering following Spence's River which leads up to the saddle between Chimney Rock and Rocky until I hit the Mourne Wall then following the Wall to the Brandy Pad, contour around Donard on the Brandy Pad and then high tail it up the last push to camp.

Unfortunately this route all depends on whether I can find somewhere to leave the car  for the night.  There seems to be a wee Museum "Mourne Museum" where I want to start from so I'm hoping I can ditch the car around there somewhere.  If I can't get parked I'm going to drive on round to Meelmore and meet up with Redleader, Matt et al and hike the Brandy Pad with them.

Here's the route I'm considering and a few Stats.  Has anybody any experience of Spence's River/Valley?  I've never heard any mention of it before for which there could be a very good reason  ???
