For Sale - Alpkit PipeDream 400
« on: September 28, 2011 »

I recently bought two synthetic sleeping bags (one for summer, one for winter!) so have decided to sell my Alpkit PipeDream 400 down sleeping bag.  If you have been around NI-Wild any length of time then the PipeDream will need no introduction as it's been the sleeping bag of choice for many of us!

I bought this sleeping bag at the start of 2010 and it has been well looked after, being used mainly for overnight trips.  Recently it developed a small hole in one of the internal baffles at the foot end allowing down to shift around between two sections.  The sleeping bag was returned to Alpkit who repaired it, so it's in tip top condition.  The bag was recently washed and hasn't been slept in since so you will be getting a fresh, clean sleeping bag that lofts beautifully.  The sleeping bag is Jaffa (orange!) in colour, right hand zipped and comes with a cotton storage sack, a compression sack and a lightweight stuff sack.

Anyone who has been looking to buy a PipeDream will know there have been serious supply issues and Alpkit have been struggling to meet the massive demand.  If you have been waiting to buy a PipeDream then this is a great opportunity to pick one up and make a saving on the £130 new price.

Performance wise the PipeDream 400 is superb, a proper 3 season sleeping bag that is very light at approx 750g and has a tiny stuffed size.  It's probably one of the biggest size and weight savings I've made in my rucksack.  If you can only have one sleeping bag for year round use in the UK then this, in my opinion, is the one.  If you are interested please drop me a PM or contact me through my blog.

£80 - will consider offers.

After glowing recommendations from twentyclicks and Mr Black I went for the Mountain Hardwear Lamina.  I had originally planned to get the Lamina 20 for winter and the Lamina 45 for summer, but when I received the Lamina 45 it seemed a bit too light on insulation for our poor excuse for summer weather.  Would be fine for hardier souls or on hot evenings, but more often than not I seem to end up on a summit in the middle of July or August feeling a bit chilly :)  So I now have a Lamina 35 for Spring/Summer and a Lamina 20 for Autumn/Winter.  Seem like decent bags so will wait and see how they work out in practice!

I'd be interested to hear what you think. I'm tempted by synthetic bags myself.

Well I picked the Lamina 20 up in the Lake District (Kat got one as well) and used it when we were staying there for the week.  Needless to say it was too hot for the 7C overnight temperatures, so I ended up sleeping in it with all the zips open.  Pack size and weight is good for synthetic, I think Mountain Hardwear are ahead of the game in this respect and whilst they are never going to compete with down they are close enough to be worth the trade off.  The only niggles I really have is that the bag seems a bit shorter than the Alpkit and at 6ft I feel I'm pretty much on the limit of fitting comfortably inside one.  Its roomy enough inside though.  The hood doesnt seem quite as snug fitting as the PipeDream either, but its still perfectly adequate.  Other than that I'm really pleased so far, looking forward to trying out the Lamina 35 on a proper wild camp :)

Quote below which refers to the Lamina 20 is from http://www.tauntonleisure.com/mountain-hardwear-lamina-20-long-sleeping-bag/p6194#tdesc_9

This is actually the long version. The dimensions are

Weight: 1.5kg
Size: 213 x 102cm
Whereas the dimensions on the regular are

Weight: 1.4kg

Size: 198 x 97cm

Probably explains why it feels shorter than the PipeDream as there seems to be 12cm difference in length between the two - well spotted.  May be a few cm difference in those dimensions as well depending on whether they are measured internally or externally.  Personally I find the Regular to be just long enough for my height and I can still stretch out with my feet touching the bottom and my head in the hood.  If I was taller or prone to wriggling around at night I would probably go for the Long, but as I tend to sleep in the foetal position its not an issue :)

hmmm tempted, always fancied a down bag, but as i've just bought a 2 season bag from asda today for a mere £3.50 my funds are low  ;D , will it be worth that extra £76.50 for an extra season, when i'm bivvying in the snow this winter i'll regret not buying it  :'(

I'm going to guess that an Alpkit Down bag is going to be more than one season warmer than an Asda £3.50 bag  :o
