Title: Quik Pod for Self Portraits
Post by: Dowser on February 14, 2012
I'm liking the look of this for out and about in the hills, or on holiday etc etc:

It's called the QuikPod Pro + and can be bought locally on Amazon for around £22.99.

Just thought I would bring it to your attention.

Also check out their Home Page (http://www.quikpod.com/Home.asp)...  Possibly the most cluttered, annoying home page I have ever seen  ;D

Or you could use a gorilla pod on your walking pole?  ;D

Good idea all the same.

The older I get the more miserable with money I get.  (Except when its bike related ;-) ) So always looking for the DIY or custom options.  Take the brush shaft on my head for the gopro mount for example LOL

Yeah, you can bodge something, but these are more suited and popular for video. Quite light and can be left set-up... gives good footage for folks making adventure documentaries who need to regularly capture themselves in the action and gives one less thing to think about. Can work quiet good crane-effect shots with them or peek over edges... slightly heavier-duty version being used quite a bit in the likes of this footage  8)

Mregan made a good point about the Gorilla Pod on a walking pole but the more I thought about it the more awkward I thought this could be and I don't always carry a walking pole with me.

Also, I don't think I would be 100% confident holding my camera over the edge of a cliff on a Gorilla Pod wrapped round my walking pole  ???

Another thing edging me towards the Quik Pod, or similar, is that I'm heading away on holiday in April and again, I wont have my walking pole with me, so I think this could be very useful for getting some cool snaps without handing my camera to a stranger.  It's also waterproof, so it should work nicely with my new Kodak (http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2895.0) underwater camera.

Hearing what Twentyclicks had to say above, and receiving a free £20 Amazon voucher yesterday has sealed the deal and my order is being place this morning.

Thats handy and at least you will be using the voucher for something you will use.  How many times I have wasted vouchers just to get using them instead of waiting for somnething worth while.

You will have to get a few shots up and let us all know the build quality.

Thankfully with my GoPro Mounts I can make my own.  I have a threaded camera mount that fits any camera.  The handle bar mount then mounts to any pole.  Understand everyone wont have that option.

The Quick Pod is just a telescopic pole with a camera thread on the end.  I think over priced for what it is but as I say a good idea.  Cheaper then it would be a winner for me.

Would this support a DSLR or just a point and shoot?  From looking at it I dont think it would have the strength in the build for a DSLR.

It's the price that's causing me the dilemma of do i buy it or do I not to be honest!  I also found a Multi Media Player  (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004TD4O1A/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&m=A1PQNRKPZ5WQCM)that I needed badly for my kids room and I used the £20 Amazon voucher on that instead.

The Quik Pod Pro + is only suitable for Point n shoot cameras.  They have another specifically for DSLRs.

There are others on Amazon which are extremely similar:

Option 1 - £8.99 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0063HRHUA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&m=A3AMF12UI1VI2Q)

Option 2 - £7.99 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0040YBAGA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&m=A3AMF12UI1VI2Q)

Option 3 - £14.39 and ridiculous postage (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Polaroid-Extender-Portrait-Handheld-Monopod/dp/B005S4DG8G/ref=pd_cp_ce_3)

Not sure what to do.  Is the Quik Pod Pro + really any better than the alternatives?

Dude look at what I have put up, it is a tripod, it has a velcro strap that will attach to you walking pole, tree, branch, bag, handlebar. It weight next to nothing and comes in nice colours.

CANT GO WRONG!!!!!!!!!

It's just a mini tripod.  I won't have my walking pole on holiday or with me when I'm snorkling/diving and you can't always find a tree, branch etc  Not really worried about the colour either.

If I was going that route I would buy a Gorilla Grip.

The Mirror on them isnt going to work is it??  I cant see it working.  And the idea of the pole is so you get a wider shot so you arent really going to be worrying about being really specific.

It would be interesting to get a users review on them to see if the extra money is worth it.
