While these are great to have that vid doesn't quite show them how they are designed. Normally they are made with one large log that keeps the whole fire up off the ground menaing you can happily get a fire going in wet/snowy ground. I've made one once using a bow saw and it was a nightmare to do, by the time I have cut my way down then chipped them out with an axe to make room for the tinder it was getting dark and I was ready for bed. Not to mention that it wasn't a spruce log so you don't get the full benefit of the resin burn.
I can fully understand why these are often cut using a chainsaw not just for speed but also the width of the channels works properly. One thing I have to try out yet though is a variation whereby instead of one large log, you cut serveral branches of 2-3" thickness then tie them together into a bundle, leaving it slightly loose in the center. Into there goes the tinder and if cut with a small saw the branches should all have flat ends allowing you to still make a level platform for cooking while being able to drive the base into the ground.
