Tearing Maps
« on: April 27, 2016 »

hi,
when i go hiking in the mountains i always use a Harvey or OS maps for the mountains i am in. i have a zippy plastic clear bag that i put the map into. this works great for keeping it dry.

but even in the bag after using the map for a number of times all the creases in it begin top tear, and i have to replace the map.

i usually put sellotape on the back side of the map along the creases to help it last longer. but it is still inevitable to tear in other parts.

i was wondering if anyone else has this issue and if so do they have a solution.

thank you

I had a similar problem with the 1/25000 Mournes map. Being a cheapskate, I didn't buy the laminated one but I was able to do a DIY lamination using clear Fablon. I only covered one side of the map but it has lasted for over 10 years. Fablon is a self adhesive plastic film available from stationery suppliers.

cheers Fred, i will look into that. ive never seen the laminated maps for sale in the shops.

i do however see the maps that claim to be waterproof, but i dont think they are.

fablon sounds like a good solution.

You can buy activity maps that have a clear plastic on them I think. They're a bit more bulky.

I've never heard of Fablon, was it hard to get on neatly with no bubbles etc Fred?

I ended up with a couple of creases and flaws but on the whole its good. I used a roller and a cloth to rub it on and smooth it out.

I run my maps through the colour photo copier and cut to size. You can then put in a zip lock bag and it fits nicely into your pocket.
