Title: Slieve Bearnagh 12.08.17
Post by: specimanYak on August 16, 2017
The weather being grand at the week-end, a few of us decided to head up to Slieve Bearnagh via The Trassey Track for the night. It was a busy night as there was 11 people camping in various groups around the torrs. It was the Perseid meteor shower and we got a calm, clear night for it. Spectacular night!

Did you get a good view of the meteors?  I spent an hour up a local hill on a karimat and saw some crackers.  It is the streaks across the sky that make the Perseid shower so good.  I quit about 1am but they said it would be best at about 4am.  That's a very late or a very early rise, not sure which would be worse!

That seemed to be a small enough spot you squeezed the tent into.  Any difficulty pegging it out?

Thanks RT, the views from Bearnagh are epic but getting up there with a full pack is a bit of a work-out!

It was cloudy until 11pm and then bang on schedule the clouds parted and we had an excellent viewing for the remainder of the night, we turned in around 1ish. Those streaks seemed to linger in the sky and a few of them looked like the quintessential 'fireball' shape. It was wonderful, taking it all in, and in the midst of a conversation there would be a 'woah' as another one caught the eye.

There were so many people camped out that night that there was slim pickings where to set-up. I rearranged my tent a few times trying to fit it in that spot, where there was less bumps etc and the pegs went in okay but I wouldn't of trusted it in high winds. Thankfully it was a really calm night.

I know what you mean about the woah moments.  You couldn't stay silent when you caught sight of one.

You're living the dream!! I've been trying to get out for ages but can't get a minute. Not even for a decent hike. Loving the videos, keep them coming

Looks like a great trip. I love Beanagh but it's such a slog getting up it.
I watched the Perseids from the garden and saw 4 in about 45 minutes, I was pleased enough with that.
