yeah, I use Nokia Sports Tracker to analyse a cycle after I'm done.  On the coast to coast I'm planning this summer I'll be uploading live so the family can meet up with me. (or rescue me when I fall off and break my neck)

It's hard on the batteries though.

Seems pretty interesting, but like you say, battery power could be an issue. I think having the GPS on knocks the pan out of the useable time. Plus, what if the phone is buried in your pocket? Does anyone know if it can use cell tower triangulation instead?

When walking or geocaching alone I use my Nokia 6630 (Symbian v3) with an external Holux GPS and Navicore Personal software. It has a feature I can use to let my better half know where I am by text at regular, changable, intervals. I was successfully used climbing Caher in October/November as I was on my own in a new-to-me area, and should anything have happened, at least my wife would have been able to narrow the search area. It also has the ability to text multiple numbers. It cost me £9 from eBay, and is ione of the best purchases I have made. Sadly I do not think it will run on my symbian v5 phone.

Battery life is very good (many hours each), both use the same battery, so if phone dies, can swap the gps battery over, but usually carry one or two charged spares anyway.

Is tower triangulation possible in NI/Rest Of UK/Down Souff?

I've had various cell interrogation doohickeys over the years and have never managed to get bearing info off any of them.  I know you can get something like a 300m CEP fix just from the tower you're on though.
