Replacing a Knife Handle
« on: May 20, 2009 »

When I was 11 and went on my first proper Scout camp (to Scotland) the whole troop went to a local outdoors store and bought ourselves knives (couldn't do that these days - don't start me ;)). I got a 6"ish Bowie knife that I still have. After years of lying in the garage and general misuse the blade is now brown and the handle is knackered. It is of some sentimental value so I'd like to restore it. How would you go about replacing a handle and whats the best way to clean it?

I'd really need to see it johnno. It would probable need polishing of the blade and cutting off the handle and making a new one. But, as I said, I'd need to have a look at it first.

For the blade I would say to rub it down with wire wool or try some brillo pad but it will take time no matter what, as for the handle it is easy enough if you follow the direction's properly, there is a local store that sell's wood for wood turner's that has been seasoned and is perfect for knife handle's or you could try to get a bit of antler and put it on.
