The Ultimate Hobo Stove
« on: February 02, 2012 »

I was browsing about the web this morning looking for cool USB gadgets for the hills, now that my Solar USB Charger is complete, and I found this...

...It could very well be my next camping gear purchase:

It's only 900g and you do not need to carry a stove, or fuel, or batteries etc etc.

Definitely my next purchase.  Think it will even take priority over my next Tesco food shop lol

Cool idea. Modern hobos can keep connected off the grid  8)

I think the best thing about this is that their main stove has been designed to address problems and needs in the developing world... this is a happy side line off the back of it. Good company!

Would there be any appetite for a NI-Wild bulk purchase of these?  I'd be keen...

I have already been in contact with the company to ask about this.  Will let you know the outcome.  I will definitely be buying one of these  :)

So, how does the heat generate electricity?

So, how does the heat generate electricity?

Take yourself down to Kilroot Power Station and ask for a tour.

I wonder if the stove is water proof/resistant?

Well now I had no idea so thought I'd find out....apparently NASA has been using this tech for years...

Anyhoo, direct quote from http://www.tegpower.com/

thermoelectric generators are made from thermoelectric modules which are solid-state integrated circuits that employ three established thermoelectric effects known as the Peltier, Seebeck and Thomson effects. It is the Seebeck effect that is responsible for electrical power generation. Their construction consists of pairs of p-type and n-type semiconductor materials forming a thermocouple. These thermocouples are then connected electrically forming an array of multiple thermocouples (thermopile). They are then sandwiched between two thin ceramic wafers.  These thermocouples are then connected electrically in series and/or parallel forming an array of multiple thermocouples (thermopile). When heat and cold are applied this device then generates electricity. Almost any heat source can be used to generate electricity, such as solar heat, ocean heat, geothermal heat, even body heat!

So thats a whole lot clearer then... ???
