Ice axe and Harness

Anyone any advise on the type of ice axe and harness a first timer should go for?

I can only really help with the harness. Depends what your hoping to do after but I would go for one with some gear loops, That way if you do get into climbing or scrambling you'll be sorted for racking your gear. The best way to buy is to go down to the shop and try it on. Most people recomend hanging in it but i'm not sure if anywhere here does that. I know Tiso's used to have a bolt in the ceiling but I think its gone now. As long as you feel comfortable in it i.e. the leg loops dont cut into your crotch or the waist belt isnt too tight. Dont buy one that just fits as you may want to put on extra layers at some stage. Apart from that its pretty much up to yourself brands like DMM and Wildcountry make decent entry level products that dont skimp on important stuff.
