most cheap kayaks get sold by more experienced members of a club to less experienced members.  Some clubs (e.g. CCKA) also have club boats that members can use.

in short, the cheapest way to get into kayaking or canoeing is to join a club.

I have a Kayak that I bought second hand that didn't work out as expected. It's more aimed towards whitewater rather than touring as a result, I thought it was quite tippy. Should say, I only went out in it once for about 10 mins. You're welcome to borrow it if you want to see how you get on.

Sort of. A touring canoe is one that goes in a straight line easily rather than being one that is highly manouverable (I think). A canadian is an open one (like you'd see a red indian in in a cowboy movie).

Sounds like a plan mate, where would be the best for learner to go?

Somewhere preferably flat and calm however the MTA sessions at shaws bridge are a perfect starter as there is no requirement for equipment and there are experienced instructors. But as I said if we can get a small group together we could sort out a few taster days.

Ps I have a few extra bits and pieces I could lend you if needed ie buoyancy aids etc

The lagan is great in all but the worst conditions but the paddle from Jaynes Shore to Inch Abbey is a must for a first time out. Once you've been round there you'll want a canoe of your own right away...
