Title: New Bicycle Purchase
Post by: Oisín on February 20, 2012
Hello everyone. I've recently purchased a new bike online and its due in delivery in the next few days.

Quote
Dunlop Special Edition Tech Spec

> 18 inch Dual Suspension Steel Frame Mountain Bike
> 18 Speed Twist Grip Gears
> Front and Rear V-Brakes
> 26 inch Alloy Wheels

> Recommended for inside leg measurement 28-34 inches
> Assembled Weight: Approximately 17kgs

So I'm going to try to get into using it often so I can get a bit fitter and if possible stronger as I do. I've did a fair bit of mountain biking along with scouts etc and have a good few scars to show to show for it. So I'm not a complete greenhorn on the subject, but neither an expert. I have purchased:
-The bike itself(above)
-Helmet  - http://www.sportsdirect.com/muddyfox-mtb-bike-helmet-936067?colcode=93606703
-Cycling shorts - http://www.sportsdirect.com/muddyfox-padded-cycling-shorts-mens-636175 (wasnt aware what is suitable trouser wise)
-Cycling top ( I think thats the name ) http://www.sportsdirect.com/muddyfox-cycling-shirt-mens-636182
-Waterproof coat (I went for something light and cheap) - http://www.sportsdirect.com/muddyfox-cycling-jacket-mens-635041?colcode=63504190
I plan to get some reflectors and lights etc along with some glasses and what not.
I'd never heard of the brand before but I thought at those prices it would be a good starting out kit etc.

Has anyone got any advice they could give me on topics such as
Food - What sort of food should I be eating before and during (sugary things or protein etc?)
Trails - Best place to look them up or advice on them etc
General bicycle Issues

Would be grateful for any advice, I know there are a good few of you who mountain bike/ cycle yourselves. Thanks, Oisin.

Eat what you are comfortable with. Sugary stuff gives you spikes highs and lows. I would avoid that until they are nessecary. Good breakfast in you before you go out then trail snacks like nuts and raisens etc it all depends how long you intend on being out as well. Everyone has different opinions but I have found the longer I want to be out the less sugary crap I want to be eating.

Don't get too hung up on what gear to wear. Again what ever you are comfortable in.

Main thing is enjoy yourself as much you can, as you get better and catch the bug that's when you start to worry about bike upgrade what clothes suits your riding etc.

You will get hooked!!

www.trailbadger.com for all your off road trails
www.cycleni.com for road stuff.

Check your bike before after and during every ride. Becareful what trails and trail features you do. I am not saying don't give the more technical trails ago just becareful. There is a reason bikes cost thousands of pounds!!

Oh aye and did I say enjoy yourself!!!
