Title: Fecking midgies
Post by: spin on July 23, 2017
What works against the fecking midgies? We were feasted on them up Bernagh on Saturday. Swarms of them. Everyone we met said the same. Lots of swiping  and swatting!!

I hear you. The only cures I know are fire and smoke! We were smothered by them at Spinkwee, but once the fire got going we were grand. There must be some decent repellant for them out there. We really got chewed to bits before they left us.

I was on Bearnagh on Saturday too, they were wild, some of the worst I've seen. Midge net and gloves work best for me  ;)

Smidge works well but as Landy says head net and gloves, you may look like a bit of a d**k but you'll be a happy d**k.  :D

I'll second Smidge and a head-net as a great combination that do a decent job.

Hateful little critters. I find that thankfully 9 out of 10 times in the Mournes there is enough wind to keep them at bay so I have never went looking for a repellent myself. I will give that Smidge a try now though.

During the 7 7's last August my legs came under severe attack while trying to enjoy a sandwich at Ben Crom dam. The worst I have ever experienced. Not nice at all!!

http://www.midgejacket.co.uk/    plus spray clothes with permethrin.... jacket looks daft but it works. Also trouser elastics are a good idea .

You can get rub on cream but it can be more annoying than the midges if you're hiking as it gets in your eyes when you sweat. Best thing really is a head net.

Bad news folks!
Anyone heading to Scotland is in for a bad time, this year has been a bumper year for midges, no less than 68 billion of them all hungry for your blood. I wonder who counted them.

Just back from there, not a midge in sight, but it was a bit breezy!
