Sea play, better done rough!
« on: January 24, 2012 »

Hi All,

Put together video of recent kayaking session at the small tide race at the entrance to Strangford Narrows next to Angus Rock, not at its best time for surfing with the tide at the end of a neap ebb but fun enough and not something to be doing in the dark to catch it at its best ;)

http://youtu.be/CsRsZI7J9W0?hd=1

Some of the biggest moving water in Northern Ireland isn't on the rivers, it's as regular as the moon and as it's salty it doesn't need rain just a bit of wind 8)

Hopefully get some more video up of the other interesting places around the coast and always looking for more people to paddle the fun stuff with!

John

Balls of Steel Dude...

I know the Bar Mouth well and don't even like venturing out in a 30ft Yacht when the tide is on the turn, never mind a Kayak.

The whirlpool effects and undercurrents, not to mention the heavy seas created, are extremely intimidating.

Looking forward to more vids... Paddle safe Jaygee  :)

Thanks, there was a 20mph gusting higher south easterly, the bar mouth was BIG and noisy, on heading out I thought there were some large boats coming in and thought it strange they were doing that on the ebb but of course it was just the waves :) Keeps you on your toes knowing you need to sort yourself out pdq else youll end up somewhere a whole lot worse very quickly.

In lesser winds the bar can be good in a kayak but still scary and can change quite quickly, no easy out either, far prefer having a counter eddy to drop in to and a rock to rest on!

As you say Dowser one of the most intimidating things is definataly the eddy lines and the boils/swirlies/whirlpools, sometimes find yourself near submerged caught in the folds :)

Fair play, the water is something I respect greatly.  It must be class to feel completely comfortable on it.

Agreed on respect for the water. Those waves were pretty fierce. Enjoyed the vid.

I'm going to do a few more Saturday afternoon turn up and paddle sessions at Shaws Bridge. It's great fun and no gear required! The white water course looks like a (trouser filling) laugh!

Kayaking is one of the things I'd like to get into, I also love the idea of island camping :)

Those turn up sessions are a good way to get started. I did a short evening course with MTA up at Shaws Bridge a few years back and got hooked quickly :)

Great vid Jaygee, you've certainly got the minerals.

Red Leader,

Salt Isalnd on Strangford is a good place to consider for a canoe overnighter.
Coney Island on Lough Neagh is also good, but less wild
