I want to walk from the Trassey car park to Hares Gap this Sat. Can anyone recommend routes? I thought you just followed the river but people are telling me that it can be muddy?

Hi Jonno,
The path pretty much runs parallel with the river and is very well defined and well trodden you can't miss it.
once you get to the base of the gap you can scramble up the rocky path or to the right on the lower slop of slieve bernagh there are much easier trails to the top.

Form what I here the weather this weekend looks promising so should be people with the same idea as you....
ansd the trails will be pretty obvious.

For route and tip i find the following sites quite helpfull

Thats excellent advice and some very great links, the BBC Blueprint site is new to me and looks very interesting. I'm taking a 10 year old and it's hard to gauge what might be too much so I'll head from the Trassey car park to the base of the gap and see how we get on. I'm figuring that if it doesn't kill me I'll stop being a chicken and take people up on some of the offers of walking that have been floating about. To date I've been too scared of not being fit enough

I'm still only a novice by most standards. My first summit was Slieve donard and it had me beat.. I almost had to finish on my hand and knees but just keep at it. The boy will be fine just take it easy. Once you reach the saddle on you right you'll see Slieve Bernagh and from personal experience it's not as tough as it looks and a great climb for yourself and a great hill to get you started.

I'm not sure how well you know the area but a really nice area for a walk is to start at Carrick little carpark. From here you have great access to some of the inner hills aslo Slieve Binnian 747m.

If you want someone to head up with I'm free most weekends I'd be more than happy to show you a few hills.

Carrick Little is one of the few areas I'm familiar with - we used to camp at Annalong Wood and I take the wife'n'boy up sometimes with a stove and tarp for sausage sarnies. I'd been considering the walk to the Blue Lough or Binian although Binian looks proper steep Cheesy

I'd love to get out some weekend with someone who knows where they're going - as long as you don't mind me gasping for air and winging like a girl

Not a bother,
just give me a bt of notice so I can clear things with the boss. Your right about Binnian it just never seams to end but the tors ontop are really cool.

Just let me know what hills and i'll get a route sorted.
