Title: Cheap tarp
Post by: RedLeader on June 16, 2009
(Please note, the topic is Cheap Tarp not Cheap Tart  ::))

I have 2 DD Hammocks and a DD tarp. I now want another tarp for the 2nd hammock.
Anyone any cheap recommendations?

I picked up really cheap ones at Nutts Corner try one of the stalls selling tools. They were £2.99.

Can you define what you mean by  "cheap"?  ;D

'Cheap' and 'good value' rarely turn out to be the same thing in my experience  ;)

Good quality at a reasonable price tarps, try USMC.
A cheap tarp and ok quality, get a tarp from lidl. About £5 or £6 for a 4 x 5m tarp. We use one as a group shelter when we are out.

Where would I get a USMC tarp?

By cheaper I mean less than the £29 for a DD Tarp. I'd actually like one slightly bigger 3x3 but not heavy (I realise I'm being very demanding :D)

For me as long as it keeps me (mostly) dry I'll use anything.  My first time camping without a tent I used the ground sheet cut from a buggered 2 man tent. Me and MG1 camped on the ben crom facing slopes of upper cove.No Bivvi bags or expensive roll mats, just sleeping bags foam mats and a Woolworths pic nic blanket all under this salvaged ground sheet.. Best night camping to date.

So now I bought a 99p 4foot x 4foot builders tarp it might not be a super expensive lightweight job but it's still lighter than a tent. With a bit of creative thinking and a sense of adventure it's amazing what you can acomplish.

The tarps togo tarps are really keenly priced. Wonder what sort of weight they are? When I go hammock camping I'll have to carry 2 tarps and 2 hammocks if I want to bring the small boy so weight is a consideration.

Cheers celt.

I think on the spec page for each tarp it give a weight per square meter so Camouflage Tarpaulin - Size 1.8m x 2.4m at 8gms would be 345.6g

I think ???

Some massive tarps for next to nothing though.

Sorry, wasn't paying enough attention and didn't see the weight. Delivery is £6 so they are definately well cheaper and the 2.4x3.0 seems spot on for over a hammock. Only question is quality. Have you used them?

   DD Tarp      3      3      9      650.00      72.22      £29.00      £3.22      Includes: 4 x 2m Guy Lines and 4 Pegs

Maybe you could buy a large tarp and cut it in two. Just fold and glue the cut side ,with suitable reinforcement material glued where you intend to put the eyelets

I tried to order a tarp from the tarps togo people and it seems that the delivery to Northern Ireland is £15. I emailed them to check and they didn't reply.

Does anyone know anywhere local that I'd get the same sort of tarp in a 3.5m x 5.4m (ish) size - maybe an army surplus store or suchlike.

In that size, try Lidl or a builders merchant.

I thought the builders merchants only did the thick plastic polythene type tarps rather than the lighter fabric ones (as you may guess I don't know a while lot about what they make tarps from :D)

I finally sorted a tarp. Had to order from ebay from http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/surplussupplier/.
This is the one I ordered : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380069432468

They did charge £5.80 for postage on the first item so the total cost for a 12x18 tarp delivered was £16.70. Considering the other online tarp shops were going to charge £15 for the priviledge of posting stuff to me it seemed like a bargain. They only charge £2.50 for postage on subsequent items so I ordered a set of Billys at the same time for £14.95 delivered.

The billys are here already (20 hours later or so) but not the tarp. I'll post a review when it arrives but to date they seem like a good seller.

Any sign of your tarp arriving yet Red?

That link Drybag posted (http://www.tarpaflex.co.uk/acatalog/army-camouflage-tarpaulins.html) looks pretty good. Anyone had any business with them before? I may send them an email to see what sort of weight their tarps come in at just out of interest.

We'll all be taking a leaf out of Dowser's book soon with the camouflage.

All I'd say is I would defo stay away from the plastic / polythene tarps. They're noisy and don't hold together well. Is totally worth the few quid extra for a decent fabric one. (Although if you want a tarp as a ground sheet then the poly ones are fine)
