Title: climbing harness wanted - advice welcome
Post by: LandyLiam on February 23, 2012
Until recently i've been using a Clog centre harness at the indoor climbing walls

but the weather is improving and i want to progress outdoors and will need a better harness with more gear loops and better adjustability

I recently borrowed a Petzl Corax which i think will meet my every need i.e.
quick adjustment (i like the 2 centre buckles which centre the belay loop)
wide fitting range (good in winter with lots of clothing on)
lots of gear loops

but if you know me, you'll know i take my time on expensive purchases researching every available option, until i see a baragin on ebay and make an impulse buy  ::)  so before the "too good to be true" offer arrives i was wondering what harnesses you all use and are there any pros and cons, i know it'lll be hard to judge and most people will have only tried one harness so have nothing to compare too, and is it just a case of sticking with a well known name and you'll not go far wrong? can harnesses really be that different?

p.s. anyone got any for sale  :)

I have a Black Diamond Blizzard which you saw at the ozone (Picture below). I do love this harness for all uses (including Indoor, outdoor and winter use)

I did have a petzl harness when I was a teen which was not a great fit.

As you know I purchased the DMM package, and have to say im delighted with the harness, its a great fit and sits comfortably, but the Pretzl does seem to be the harness of choice with men from what ive seen.  Ask the guys in Tollymore, get as many opions as possible before you make up your mind.  Happy shopping  :)

I use a Black Diamond Couloir, but it's probably not what you're looking. It's super-light alpine harness. Only 2 gear loops, no padding. Very adjustable though, and cheap, and has wee special loops for ice-screw racking  ;D
Mammut and ArcTeryx have some brill alpine harnesses, but they weren't available at the time and are pricier.

You seem to be aware of the features Liam, so anything that meets your requirements should do fine. Comfort of fit would be the only other consideration.

I may be tempted to get a lightweight alpine harness as well as i'll have to carry one in my rucksack a lot just in case a situation arises, but for the moment i'm just looking for an all purpose one. The Couloir is half the weight of the Corax, but the belay loop only has half the strength (12KN compared to 25KN), I think i'll go for strength  :)
