Yesterday dander and overnight
« on: February 18, 2011 »

Evening all, just thought I would post some photos of a wee dander / overnight I had with two of my mates, Paul and Lauren.

We started out from Donard car park about one and ended up at our campsite around 6-6:30.

Route

Just cleared Donard wood at the ice house

Quick break before the Donard saddle stairs

About to hit the saddle

Having a coffee at the saddle

Looking down the Annalong River

Ben Crom

Sunset half an hour before camp

Fire logs doing their stuff

Sausage casserole on the stove

Campsite

We carried everything for the trip with us. That included three fire logs and two bottles of cider lol

That looks like a crackin' spot to pitch!  We wouldn't have been all that far from that spot on our way to meet you the weekend of the Mourne Way, but I don't remember seeing anywhere as obviously good looking as that.  Nice sunset too :)

You pass right by it but it is quite hidden away.

Liam, yea it's that neck of the woods, I'll post a better version of the campsite location later.

Hi, Mike the route took about five and a half hours with a few breaks added, Quo mapping gives the route a 4hrs16 but I thought that was a bit optimistic.

From the sheepfold at the bottom of the Trassey track, it took 45mins

Detailed view of the site

Hopefully this will help

At the footbridge marked on the map in Tollymore you should see a lane with a farmers gate 300 meters on up. Slightly to the left of the gate is an old building, which I am told, is owned by Campbell College School as a mountain base. If you walk to the house and go left over the next gate along the path, you will end up at a corner of a field. Over that, fence and you are away. I know that description is woeful but it makes sense when you see it on the ground.

From looking at the map if you aim for the wall that I have marked in red you will drop into the site. Next time I do that walk I plan to hug the wall and just drop in where I have marked.

There is a lot of glass knocking about; we did our best to tidy it into the fire area. I always thought it was a hidden gem of a place but it seems the kids have found out about it.
