Winter Camping
« on: August 10, 2009 »

Has anyone been camping around the Mournes in winter. It looks really fun to be out when it's cold and snowy but I can't decide if it would ever be possible to be overly comfortable.

I've not camped in the Mournes during winter, but I have spent the odd night out in winter. With a good sleeping bag and most importantly a good sleeping mat, it's fine. bit of a shock though in the morning when you have to leave the sleeping bag to get dressed. Keep your cloths in your sleeping bag though, and even your boots if they will fit and they are not too wet.

I have been up in the dead of winter with snow and dense fog , and I must say its awsome and almost magical.
Apart from the obvious problems that come with this type of weather as long as you are well prepared, have some experiance and keep a cool head it can be really enjoyable.
I found one of the best parts was in the morning when you get up to get a brew the fact that it can be so crisp and clear and when you look out over the surrounding area covered by a fresh snow fall there are no footprints and you can feel as if you are going to be the first person in the world to discover what is ahead.

I know that sounds really daft but thats the kick I got anyway :D
