What grade is that mourneman?
-
To be honest Lenny I've very little climbing experience, don't think it would be rated as difficult anyway,I done this chimney sevaral years back with an experienced climber &found it quite easy.By wedging your back against one side you simply force yourself up with brut leg work
-
Anyone up for a camp on St Paddy's day?
-
I'm heading with a few others up on the 16th and camping overnight... Feel free to join in or pop up and say hello on Paddys Day... Will post details when they're confirmed

Going on a wee outing with the wife and kids tomorrow ,nothing to strenuous ,starting at donard car pk approx 11.00 esh and headin up to the ice house and weather permiting and children permiting might head on up to donard saddle ,if its to wet will just have lunch in the woods and back down through the forestry paths to car pk . I ll be in a metalic blue seat alamabra if any one fancys joining us c u at the car pk
-
First thought is dont descrbe your car and where it will be for your own safety. If people want to join your walk they should private mail you. Last thing you want is to come down the mountain and find some wee rat has been through your car cos he knew where u went to.
second I'm planing a walk on Tuesday 10th april. will hopfully take in some caves on ben crom and cover about 9 miles at a guess. PM for more details if you want to go. Plan to set off about 11.
-
just a wee up date on the family outing .
after initialy calming them all down regarding the donard car pk on easter monday safety threat , ;D
we set out up glen river in the rain but as someone said "better a wet day in hills than a dry one in the office"
the usual trek through the forest was a bit of an aclimatisation for them we continued past the niwild official
camp site ,by the way the easter logs are still there ,
the rain persisted untill lunch time at the edge of the forest but we stopped there for refreshments.
The weather finaly got the better of the wee ones and just before the final Donard / Commedagh saddle the kids had had enough.
So we came back down via the holly tree geo cache and rolled are eggs at the ice house most went into the river!!
Finaly we ended up at Villa Vinci which is my only brieb into getting them all up the Mournes.
A good day (even though i still havent got Commedagh marked off yet ::) )
-
i usually use coco's as the bribe ;D
-

-
I thought of that t18 but i haven't done any climbing before and 9.30 is too early. I will look out for them.
Can you use a kindle in the mountains does anyone know?
-
Kindles download books to the device so as long as it's charged it's good to go.

-
Few of us doing a "Tarpology" quick overnighter on Monday 7th in Tollymore. Idea is to bring your poncho / tarp and do a bit of experimentation in the forest as to what works / dosen't.
I have a spare poncho if anyone wants to have a go!
..... bring a tent if you must, however we in the militant wing of NI Wild now consider a tent "glamping" ;D ;D ;D
-
ah rusty,pure class,karma ;D
-
I've been meaning to get some tarp experimentation in for a while but unfortunately Monday doesn't suit. I'd be interested to see some photos of the fruits of your labor.

Planning an easy trip through tollymore to camp along Spinkwee river tomorrow night.
I might try something more challenging if someone joins me, which is to start early and go up Bernagh, then either camp there or move down to hares gap/Ben crom reservoir to camp.

Anyone heading for the mountains tomorrow? Maybe Annalong river to see if Lenny's out of his bed yet ;) , perhaps Bloody Bridge direction (just trying to keep away from the country roads after reading about the struggles that the MMR and locals are having getting around...last thing I was to be doing is to be getting in their way)

Mourne Mountain Rescue Team on Facebake - "Crampons and axes essential as conditions underfoot are treacherous."
Now, I've neither crampons nor axe so I'll see how it goes on the day.
If your crampons did give on a sheet of ice and you slid for a bit - in those conditions a helmet might be in order too.
Might bump your head and end up damaging a bit of the mourne wall :D
Up donard is hard enough going in perfect conditions.
With my pack - harder still.
In the weather we have now even without a rucksack, wee bit hairy..
Then theres possible avalanches and yeti's to think about.. :)
-
If in doubt, don't. And not because it rhymes :)

When i was heading up to the Mourne Wall on wednesday i met a hiker, John, coming back down wearing his crampons and carrying an ice axe, he was the picture of worn out happiness. Up at the wall i watched 3 students sliding down on their arses from Donard summit, each to their own.
-
I'm gonna head up on monday too. Anyone got any routes planned. around doan direction has been suggested.
-
Up at the wall i watched 3 students sliding down on their arses from Donard summit, each to their own.
i slid the whole way from the summit to the saddle on my arse practising ice axe arrests, was funny when i came over the hill quite fast and about 20 walkers suddenly stopped and stared thinking i wasn't going to stop :) my thigh is quite sore today as there lots of icy patches uinder the snow and i took a bit of a battering :(
-
As I think it'd be too much hassle pitching a tent on Donard just now may head to Sprinkwee with a load of fire logs, camera and a bottle or Redbreast :)
But, thinking it may have gathered a fair bit of snow down in there.
Anyone been that way in the past few days?
Cheers,
Geo...
( Heads off to buy firelogs anyway ;) )
-
I've spotted a potentially nice window in the weather for a decent camp this upcoming Monday to Wednesday.
I was thinking of heading to Slieve Bernagh to attempt a summit camp, with the fallback plan being a low level camp at the northern tip of Ben Crom reservoir or hares gap.
It will be on either Monday or Tuesday night and company would be appreciated - otherwise I'll either go with the fall back plan or stick to the woods (though my last two camps have been forest ones and I'm craving some altitude).
-
I might be up for this!
-
Anyone free this week for a dander in the hills, Wed of Fri??
-
Or a climb??
-
I'm headin up Friday round 1/2 pm for a 6 hour hike. Trying to get distance in, what were you thinking?
-
I've now been roped into working tomorrow and Friday.. Needs must.. :(
-
Nae bother
-
Hares gap over-nighter this Monday 22nd, with a possible walk up Bernagh before/after weather dependent.
-
Tomorrow my plan is to head up the mournes though i will more than likely be staying over if anyones interested weather is to be good i will be heading towards donard wood as i will be hammocking mark ..
-
I am doing a camp overnight in larne saturday 11th may, if you want to join me, pm me for location of camp.
-
Sunday 12th (tomorrow), walk and camp somewhere in the mournes. Possibly Spinkwee river, or somewhere else that is sheltered from the wind.
-
spRinkwee? As landyliam loves for you to call it? >=)

Just back from there, the same thoughts as you, needed protection from the wind.
-
And how did you get on?
-
I'll be camping in the mournes tomorrow evening, probably commedagh or donard if anyone's keen
-
Enjoy!
-
I will be hammocking this sat and sun night in donard woods possibly futher up the forest depending on how many others are around ..
-
Commedagh tomorrow night if anyones keen
-
Me and rich will be up somewhere not so sure where tho. Think it's to be windy sat late on and sun early hours.
-
Aye, im camping sat night too but itll be somewhere more sheltered.
-
Slievelamagan summit camp planned for this Saturday. I'll hopefully have a new bivvy bag by then.
Rumblebum and myself are going to have a go at this bad boy for the first time. The weather forecast seems to be good so far (temperature feels like 1C-perfect!). Probably leaving Carricklittle late afternoon and heading up via Lower Cove/Cove Lough for a bit of an explore en route.
If weather takes a turn for the worst we may change plans to something like Slieve Loughshannagh or Carn Mountain to make use of the Mourne Wall. Hopefully be able to confirm in a couple of days time.
You're welcome to join us :)
-
Would love to go but alas I'm working Sat night. I haven't yet climbed Lamagan so would be keen to do it! Hope you's enjoy yourselves.
-
That's unfortunate KG, it would have been a good chance to celebrate getting your new job!
Camp definately on, I've given it its' own thread:

Cheers Yak no worries... 8)

Enjoy your morning Glenn!!
-
Hi everyone!
I haven't been on in ages due to work and family and still haven't managed to meet up with anybody. Was looking at maybe doing a little over nighter in the mournes (annalong wood, donard wood etc) at the start of December when my work schedule frees up a bit. Thought it might be a good opportunity for other new people in the same sort of boat as me to get together before Christmas. Goes without saying that everybody is welcome, so throw some dates and locations at me so we can try and sort something out. Also I am a caravan park warden in Newcastle, only 15 mins walk from town centre if people would want to leave their cars here, it might be more secure than the car parks in town?
Moxy
-
Feel like a bit of a donkey now! lol
For some reason I thought the Christmas camp was later in the month, - but it isn't. So I am going to head to that instead.
Moxy
-
Right folks if I spend another day in the house im gonna eat myself into oblivion so we are going to have a crack at Binnian tomorrow morning Sat 28th if anyone has any interest give us a wee shout...
Glenn.
-
Camping in the Mournes this friday night, with the hope of doing a day hike before heading home on Saturday. Not sure where yet, maybe Donard or Commedagh. PM me if interested in joining me
-
Alas, I'm away this weekend. Shame, I'm itching for a non-forest camp.
-
Nice to see the dust blown off this thread :) Can't join you, as I'll be on a course in the Mournes this weekend. We could could get a bit wet this weekend. Although Friday is looking better so you might be fine. Have the camera ready and you might get a cool sunset with all the Saharan dust diffusing the sunlight.
-
Not quite short notice but I am heading up to the Sperrins for as full a day as I can manage in a couple of weeks, got some new lightweight gear and wanting to give it a run. Will be next Sunday 20/04 and likely aiming to start around 7amish. Anyone who lives over this direction and wants to head out together feel free to drop me a pm as we could sort out something with leaving cars at different spots to avoid having to make a circle.
-
Quick bivvy tomorrow evening after work? Maybe at commedagh or the saddle?
-
I was up on Friday afternoon. If I had of seen this before then you could have joined us.
-
Anyone up for heading up on Friday? I'm planning on taking the day off work and heading up early, leaving from Belfast
-
Hopefully a SlieveMoughanmore summit camp this Friday. I've given it a wee thread here (http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=4845.0).
-
Toying with the idea of a quick overnighter in the Hares Gap area tonight or tomorrow night, maybe even go higher to Bearnagh or Slievenaglogh, weather looking fairly calm and cloudy but there's a small chance it could break up and show the stars. If interested pm me your number and we can meet up somewhere.
-
I'm having the same thought as yourself as I need to use a day up in work. I was thinking of doing a summit camp on Doan though depending on conditions. Although as you say, the weather looks good, fingers crossed.
-
Tonight didn't happen (just as well as its an auld drizzly evening) so it looks like Adam & I are blind dating it tomorrow night. Location to be confirmed. All welcome.
-
Anyone heading up to play in the snow tomorrow? (Sunday looking a bit wet)
-
Is there a lot of snow?
-
(http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd496/landyliam/Mobile%20Uploads/mournessnow12dec2014_zps19a9ca02.jpg)
Looks like a nice covering above 400m, I might go for a dander but not free til after 3pm.
-
Wow looks great. I was thinking of going around mid day with Hares Gap in mind. Though at that, I'm going to help walk off a back strain so I won't be much good to you as I might not be going very far at any great speed.
-
Have fun guys. May head for mellmore as well and head over to beg.
Edit: Was a good day for walking. Just enough snow to have a bit of fun with:

Any snow up in the Mournes today? I'm heading up early in the morning and wondering what conditions are like.
-
Going for a quick overnighter tonight to try out some new kit. Haven't really thought of a location but I'll be parking at meelmore and taking it from there. Anyone else fancy it?
-
I might pop up for a walk later so let me know where you end up, shelter stone could be a nice spot for some photos.
-
Adam couldn't make it out in the end due to transport issues so I headed up to Donard Forest with stove in hand to make some dinner with tent also packed to give me the option of staying out.
But the wind was fierce and I didn't feel good about camping here, not helped by the fact I forgotten my headtorch so only had a handtorch, so I headed back down after I filled my belly :) . Shelter stone may well have been the better option.
-
No snow up there then?
-
Also wondering the same! Saturday seems to be reasonably mild. I take it there is at least some snow?
-
Anyone in the NW area who fancies a dander tomorrow, I'm heading up to Binevenagh. Will be aiming to get there around 12 from St Aidan's church and try to find the right way up through the hare's path to the cliff tops. Will be camping somewhere near to the lake at the mountain top that night.
-
Sorry I missed this one .Didn't read it till it was past .keep us in mind of any more
-
Thinking of heading up to the woods around Helens Tower (bangor) this coming Saturday night 17thfor a wee overnighter around the fire with a few beers, if anyone's up for it giz a wee shout.

-
Sorry, very last minute. I'm thinking of camping overnight Saturday 24 January, setting out from Carrick Little. Nothing def yet, depends how early I get away. I don't think I fancy Annalong woods so would be aiming for further up valley, have slept on Binnian before but might be bit cold. I'll be bringing Black Bush if anyone is interested 353868543837. Rams Island camp - Sat June 25th. Let me know if you want to go
-
Hi Heggs you anyone yet ?
what are the rough timings please..?
-
Hi Torp
It's very quiet on here, not many have replied to my recent posts and no takers yet (are you definitely going?)
I have put it on a facebook post too on the NI micro adventures page and one guy so far is confirmed.
It's a pity because it's such a great place and one of the best spots for a relaxing wild camp.
I'm thinking 3-4pm Saturday, leaving 10-11am Sunday (thats plenty of time)
-
will confirm either tonight or first thing in morning mate but at present i'am all for it ;D
could you let me know the details of where we are meeting up please as not too sure of the area.
Many thanks
Davy
-
We can meet up at sandy bay marina:
https://goo.gl/maps/a2iEVbGQrpB2
There is a secure car park. It is close to Glenavy. The boat will then bring us over from there. I'll let you know times a bit later in the week
-
Hi Heggs,
Count me in mate the earlier the better, what do you recommend hammock or tent never been before?
Thanks
Davy
-
That's great, that should make 5 of us in total now.
I'm in 2 minds at the minute. I'd love to bivvy myself but the last time I did there, I woke up with half of the insects of rams island in the bivvy beside me lol
There are great spots for both hammock and tent, it depends on your preference and if your hammock has a bug net!
You can hang a hammock right at the waters edge too which is nice
-
just got a bug net so think i'll go with the hammock this for a bit of craic , need to sort out the hanging system anyway so this will be a good opportunity.

Hi guys this might not be exactly short notice but I'm planning a wee camp Saturday 27th--Sunday 28th to either Spinkwee river or Annalong wood if the weather isn't great. I'm also open to any other spots, so if you're free those dates and want to get out give me a shout.
ATB Glenn
-
Hi Glenn, I could be up for that, its been a while since I last got out and think I should get the cob webs off my tent
-
Good stuff mate, Spinkwee is a cracking wee spot I'll probably leave the car at Meelmore and dander over.
Speak soon
Glenn
-
Hi Glenn, im not too good with that area so may need to speak to you about parking and how far the walk is and so on. Been a while since i walked more than 20 feet haha.
-
No bother it's about a 3mile dander through tollymore and we could meet in Newcastle and take it from there and you never know we might get a bit more takers during the week. :)
-
Thinking of a wee outing this Sat/Sun night if anyone's interested. Not sure where yet but Fofanny / Annalong or Helens Tower are what I have been thinking of.
-
I'm up for it ;D

-
Hi Glen where you fancy going mate??
-
I'm easy mate, anywhere you like, forecast is looking pretty good and I'm not held for time I'm free all weekend.
-
This old body of mine isnt up to much these days so for me its the one with the littlest walking lol
-
Suits me mate I honestly don't mind where. I'm just looking forward to getting out again as the free weekends are seeming awfully hard to come by at the moment and a lazy night under the stars and round a nice wee fire would just hit the spot ;)
-
Go for Helens Tower, past the two ponds and on the left, take the road that cuts through the middle of the ponds and at the first crossroads can be our RV. I setup a few hundred meters past here on the left and had loads of wood cut that I didnt use a few weeks ago so hope it is still there. What time suits you Glen??
-
Hi Glen and Torp,
How did the outing go?
-
Great wee camp last night guys and good to meet another wilder.
There's something special about a fire a few drinks a bit of banter and ahem ahem a light supper lol.
Until the next one, Glenn.
-
light supper lol Jaws would have struggled with that lot, good to finally get out and meet you Glen and I think a good night was held by all involved and to meet Dave again and cant wait till the next one ;D ;D ;D
-
That was a great night guys!
-
Nice Video Dave,
a good night with good company and good craic
-
Looks like you got great weather. Nice video Yak 8)

Having lived in Belfast my whole life and never been up Cavehill I think it's time that changed, so I'm gonna head up this Friday 4th November if anyone feels like it your more than welcome to join me.
Glenn
-
Alas, I'm working Friday but Cave Hill is well worth a once around. The circular route starting at Belfast Castle is superb.

Was up on Sunday past and more or less done that circular route. It was the first time in years that I went down round that lower (as in southerly on the map RL posted) section. Couldn't believe the amount of work they have done on it pitching the stone steps and that. It's a very sustainable job. We actually stayed on the 140m contour mark along those tracks back to the car park. A fantastic afternoon out. Enjoy yourself Glenn.
-
Guys how long would it take to get around that route and is it signposted, where is it best to park up?
-
If you park at Belfast Castle I'm pretty sure it's a waymarked trail and there's a noticeboard with a map on it where the trail starts. When I was doing it every week it was taking 1.5 - 2 hours but if you're stopping to enjoy the view etc it would probably take longer.
This is a pretty accurate description of it:
Begin at the interpretative panel in the car park just before the entrance to Belfast Castle. Climb up the path on your left until you reach the first junction. Turn right. Follow this path through the woodland, keeping to the left of any of the junctions you come to. This path leads up through the trees, climbing on to a plateau. Stop here to admire the fabulous views over the city and Belfast Lough.
Take the next path on your left. This skirts the Devil’s Punchbowl, passing below the largest cave before veering to the right. Follow this path as it climbs steadily up the hill, pausing to take in the surroundings and views on the way.
Continue climbing up the steps to a cattle grid and fence — at the top veer to the left and follow the grass path to the top of the hill and McArt’s Fort. Pause again to take in the magnificent views before joining the main path on its gradual descent down the south-facing slopes of Cave Hill.
Continue downhill, taking the next lane on your left. This leads down past the top of Carr’s Glen and carries on for some distance before reaching the Upper Cavehill Road. Go down the footpath a short way and take the path to the left. Climb over the ridge and descend into Belfast Castle Estate. Return to the starting point by means of the footpath up the main driveway.

Helen's Tower this Saturday 20th May anyone up for it????
-
Not me, wife's out for the night so I'm looking after the wee ones otherwise I'd have tried it.
-
Hoping for a 3/4 night trip starting Monday 22nd May either in the Mournes / Helens Tower,
if I get to the Mournes will either be Fofanny or Spelga with some fishing involved.
-
Fair play Torp, it'll be a few more years before I'll be able to do a 3-4 nighter! I've only camped once so far this year, can only manage to get out hiking right now :(
-

-
Anyone up for a few nights just camping at either Spelga/Foffany next Mon/Tues or Wed? hope to chill and just do a bit o fishing ;D ;D ;D
-
I could be up for a wee night. I'll be working though so maybe 7pm to 6am Monday or Tues but not both. I could meet you there if you're planning a longer trip? Let me know what you're thinking mate
-
No probs Stephen will let you know 2morrow, what suits you better as I'm hoping to go up on Monday and return on Wed/Thurs ;) ;D ;D

Nice one Dave it's been awhile be good to catch up ;)
-
Room for a wee one?
-
There certainly is :)
-
Take it you're hammocking? Can't remember, is there room to set uo a second hammock/tarp setup?
-
Not sure what my set up is going to be yet (hopefully the hammock) but yeah plenty of trees to sling up another hammock set up :)
-
Would there be room for 1 more?! ;D
-
Hi Heggs how's it going mate? dont' see why not mucker you been before? ;D ;D
-
Not too bad thanks Torp, how're you?
Yeah, been in that area twice before but 2 different spots.
Which one is it this time?
Looking forward to catching up with you guys!
-
Will be a good night with plenty of beer ;) not doing too great bud but will fill you in up there, as far as I am aware its the area beside the 2 lakes if that makes sense, what are you bring set up wise?, I was just going to bring the Tarp.
Be good to catch up with me mates again ain't seen anyone since Xmas dinner.
-
Sounds good. No problem, hope things aren't too bad though.
I'll probably just bring my 1 man tent for the least hassle.
Looking forward to it
-
Welcome aboard mate :) :)
-
Thanks captain! ;)
-
Yeah as Torp said we'll be beside the lakes the same spot as the last time you where up.
-
Nice one mate, cheers
-
Anyone ever had issues leaving the car overnight at Blackwoods?
-
Have never done it mate although if you speak with Glenn B they park over the other side and tab in, aint heard of any probs there ;D
-
Probably be safe enough I'm sure folks have had a few drinks after golf and left car to the next day. The only issue that you may have is if your heading early on Sunday morning theym might have gates locked. I always park up on the other side at the ark farm and dander in or you could leave the car up at Clandeboye golf club also.
-
think the weathers to be rough tonight guys but ease of slightly tomorrow make sure you bring your wet gear lmao ;D ??? ;)
-
Forecast is to dry up tomorrow afternoon and really windy :o :o :o
-
That'll be the beans...
-
That'll be the beans...
Was just packing mine there as you put that up Martin (Great minds.....) :) :) :)
-
Hey all, it's sounding like a party not to be missed. I'll not be out again for another wee while so this sounds like the ticket. I've only walked through the area once so haven't a clue where you are planning to be. I'm tempted to walk in along the Clandeboye Way. On googlemaps I see a body of water NW of Helen's Tower is that where you plan to be?
Edit: just found it on a previous post of Torp's, seems to be the bit I was looking at.
-
Are you there yet :)
-
If you are asking me Glenn, no. Still in the house but leaving now, probably about 9pm before I am there. What's the deal with wood, is there enough dead fall to burn?
-
By the time you get here we'll have it all burnt :) :) there's loads of wood up here.
-
Thanks guys for a great night was well overdue, with plenty of beer and and some good stories ;D ;D ;D ;)
-
Brilliant night, a real good laugh. Found the remains of the hut it was slap bang in the middle of a felled area of the woods.
-
Yes, thanks guys. It was a great night and had a really good laugh! :D
-
Cracking night. Just wish I'd never heard the moustache story...
-
That was an excellent night guys. Nothing beats a good laugh round the camp fire. Cheers to all.
-
Sorry guys missed all these. Great catch-up with you all, and well overdue. What a cracking morning Sunday was, absolutely beautiful.
-
Hey Everyone,
Not sure if this is the correct place to put this but I am heading to Silent Valley reservoir for a wee day hike on Monday.
If anyone wants to come along you are all more than welcome. I am normally there ready to go by about 10:00am.
Happy Hiking!
-
Thinking I might try and get a wee trip this Sat to Helen's Tower if anyone is wanting an outing.
-
Love to but fully-booked. Enjoy!
-
I was planning on heading out somewhere this week-end myself Torp and Helen's Tower would do the job. I'll send you a PM later so we can get times arranged etc.
Thinking I might try and get a wee trip this Sat to Helen's Tower if anyone is wanting an outing.
-
Not 100% just yet mate but all being well should be ok will be intouch bud. ;)
-
The weather forecast for this weekend has camp written all over it, unfortunately I'm up to my eyes in it over the next couple of weekends so won't be able to make this one :( :(
-
No worries mate sure we will get out again soon ;)
-
Was thinking of heading to the Sperrins on Saturday if anybody would like to meet up, if the weather holds out the view from Sawel would be something else.
If you're up for it, let me know.
Cheers
-
Wish I could, really keen to get to know the Sperrins better! But am in England this weekend, hopefully walking in the Malvern Hills.
Definitely need a wild camp soon, though.
