Coat sizing
« on: October 21, 2013 »

The subject of coats, goretex, event has been discussed quite a bit lately with Mourneman being on the hunt for a new coat last week.

One thing that came up was how my coat (a second hand Mountain Equipment goretex coat) was a size larger than I needed.

This was irritating initially, until I discovered one night I can get my down jacket underneath it without compromising loft and thereby ensuring I'm warm but not in trouble if we get a downpour while sitting around camp.

Does anyone else do this or is that just me?

Mines like that, I like that I can fit my insulation on underneath. It's certainly not gaping when I don't have something under it and it has enough draw cords to pull it tighter than I would like lol

I would usually wear my primaloft coat under my waterproof coat when around camp.  Not sure I could fit a lofty down coat under it though.  Bizarrely my waterproof coat is a size smaller then I usually wear.

I like a large size in a rain coat, usually means the arms are a bit long but sure that keeps the hands dry  :)  prefer something a bit closer fitting for active use though so it doesn't flap to much in the wind and create drag (i.e. turn me into a kite  :o )

I got a Mountain Equipment jacket (Ogre I think) after the fire at Cotswolds when they had the 50% off and I had to take a slightly larger size because it was all that was left. It is roomy enough for a down jacket underneath which is good but unfortunately it also has a hood that's too large and sleeves too long. I'd defo swap for a more appropriate size if I could.
