A change of view
« on: April 05, 2012 »

Following my recent day out with Ed in the Mourne's i've come to change my view on carrying a stove on just a days walk,so armed with my trusted mini trangia, daysac & bladder pack i set out with my dogs for a country walk this morning, after a while i set up the trangia, within minutes hot coffee  ;D anyway beats carrying a 2 ltr berghaus flask, thinking now hot stews & currys  :-X,also apart from anything it certainly adds to the day out.

Nice wee setup there :-)

For full days walk I always carry several lbs of either meat or meaty food like stew, alongside the obligatory sugars like choc and energy gels.

I reckon your stew idea is a good one, esp on a brisker morning.

I like the idea of taking a tubberware cylinder and cracking maybe a dozen eggs into it, grinding in some pepper and sealing it shut. Pack a lb of bacon and a few sausages - rise before sunrise and hike up commedagh - scrambled egg breakfast on the summit as the sun rises - no need to whisk - the walk up the mountain did that for you! :)

Youve got me talking about food again

Aren't you ever concerned about meat going off especially if it's a really hot day?  Or am I just being over conscious?

The only downside to going outdoors is having to come back inside.

It always gets bought the day before it heads out. Cooked thoroughly too.
If possible the meat will be pre-cooked if its the kinda stuff that takes a while.

I figure if meat has a week left in the fridge it can last a day in my pack next to the water :-)

In really, really hot weather I would probably think twice about overdoing it with the meat, but thankfully we don't get many of those

For 1 day I wouldn't really worry if it was fresh to begin with. Cook it through well if in doubt.

I'd be cautious about raw chicken any longer, but beef and pork less so.
Cooked or cured meats tend to be fine for days...I've never noticed anything get warm really inside the rucksack: bury it in your insulating layer to be sure. Canned stuff would be fine for ages.

Ham, bacon, corned beef, frankfurter, chorizo etc.
I've also carried cheese for a week, and in Corsica, Mike and I hard-boiled a dozen eggs: finished them for breakfast 3 hot days later, seemed fine.
