Title: Caingorms Help
Post by: LennyJ1 on March 21, 2011
Hey Guys

This September I am going to the Caingorms with my wife.

Looking for hints and tips of things to do. Have any of you any ideas? We will be taking the bikes as well.

Cheers

I stayed in Loch Insh when I took a group skiing. I would thoroughly recommend it.

I've stayed in an outdoors centre there many times (when I was younger) in both summer and winter.  All the activities were organised by the centre but some of the locations we used include:

The Lecht (http://www.lecht.co.uk/4.html)  I was only there in the winter, but I see they have lots of mountain bike trails.

The River Spey - a quick search on the web will find lots of people organising kayak and canadian canoe trips.  Some nice wee rapids and will cater for all abilities.

Funicular - railway to take you to the top of Cairngorm (or near to it?)

Cayonning/Gorge Walking - Don't exactly remember where, but there are some great spots for this for example (http://www.fullonadventure.co.uk/adventure-days/canyoning/)

Loch Morlich (http://www.lochmorlich.com/) is at the base of Cairngorm and does all the watersports.  If you have never done it, sailing in a 'topper' boat is great fun.  It is a single person boat that is dead easy to right again once you coup it ;D

I can highly recommend Aviemore for a night on the lash!

Hopefully will be able to tell you more when I get back from the TGO Challenge at the end of May!  My route runs from Kingussie along the River Feshie and then across the Lairig Ghru (http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/cairngorms/lairig-ghru.shtml).  Hopefully spending the night in Corrour Bothy before dropping down into Braemar where I will be staying in the Scottish Youth Hostel and taking a well earned rest day :)

Oh yes.

Pint of Belhavens best and a 12 year old glenmorangie. Watch out for the huge barmaid in the winking owl.

Nobody told me you couldn't sleep on the bar!!

Try Ben MacDhui, but keep an eye out for the big grey man!  :o
