Title: Archery Day - Mourne Archery Centre
Post by: Dowser on November 15, 2010
I spoke to Katy today from the  Mourne Archery Centre (http://www.themournearcherycentre.co.uk/Home.aspx) to find out about organising a group session for all those NI-Wilders who fancy having a crack at a bit of Archery.

The Mourne Archery Centre is a family run business and welcome groups of 2-30 and will provide all the equipment and tuition.  It's a relatively cheap day out, costing £5 per hour and I reckon two hours would be plenty to get us started.

They are open Sundays from 2-6pm and I think a Sunday would be the best day to go down as most peeps are free on a Sunday, with only the most unfortunate having to work  :'(

If you interested in having a go and possibly meeting for a bite to eat, and a quick pint after, around Newcastle, then throw up a reply post and register your interest.  If we are going to do this I think we should aim for (No pun intended) either Sunday 21st or 28th of November; or Sunday 12th December.

Be warned, archery is very addictive.  If you have one to many hobbies already then maybe this is not for you  ;)

I think it's safe to say you can count me and Kat in for this one :)

How does Sunday the 28th November suit everyone?  The 28th gives us a bit of time to get things organised (not that this one needs much organising, we just turn up... Sober!!!).  The 12th of December, that I suggested, is the day after our Christmas Rampage in Belfast, which might not be the greatest of ideas  ::)

The earlier we do it, the more time you'll have to ask Santa for an Archery set ;)

Last minute requests really upset the Elves!!!

Count me in!! With possibly another..

Katy from the Mourne Archery Centre has advised me that the cost is only £5 per session and not £5 per hour, like I had said in my original post, so this is great value for money.

Katy also recommended the "Maghera Inn", which is just on the next corner to the Archery Centre, so it looks like we have a venue for a bite to eat and a pint afterwards, for those who want to stick around.

I can do the 21st, but what about the 5th December the day after our xmas camp as everyone will be down that area already?

The 21st doesn't give us a lot of time to get organised and from past experience most people will be ready for an afternoon on the sofa, watching the Grand Prix, recovering from a night in the hills on the 5th.

I think Archery is something you would want to be doing fresh and relaxed  8)

I hope to be there too (do we have to wear tights!!!) + a kid or two  (for archery - not the drinking)

Maghera Inn does great food ( http://www.themagherainn.com/dining-1/sunday-menu ) but i'd be as happy at KFC or Top Of The Town in Newcastle

Oh... Defo on the tights... I must have forgot to say it's mandatory in my original post  :D

The menu for the Maghera Inn looks very good.  I live on KFC, and junk food in general, so I think I'll treat myself on Sunday... Hope my body doesn't reject the good wholesome offerings from the Inn.  :P

... and KFC don't do Beer!!!

Sounds to me like somebody is getting the Archery bug   ;)...   Another great place to get Archery Equipment and good honest advice is Kilmore Archery Centre  (http://www.kilmore-archery.co.uk/).  Prices are very competitive, even compared to stores, and the owner Wellesley will fit you for the correct bow and arrows.  I am a big fan of shopping on-line for almost everything, but from experience I think your first bow is something that needs to be fitted.  I think I was just lucky with my first set-up. There was definately a lot of educated guessing going on that could have been avoided  :P

Today really was a great day out.  The Mourne Archery Centre is so relaxed and welcoming and definately know how to make the sport of Archery fun.

Wrap up warm though, it does get a bit nippy!!!

Here's a few pics of the day...  Unfortunately not the best pics I've ever taken.  I was a bit busy bursting balloons from 20 paces:

Was a top day and a great bit of craic. Very relaxed and informal plus reasonably priced. I'd definitely be up for a jaunt back.
Did I miss a good meal? I've passed that restaurant loads of times on my way home from Meelmore and often pondered popping in for a bite and a pint!

You missed a great meal and an even greater pint.  I think the Maghera Inn should be the official NI-Wild Boozer when we are down that direction.  The food is 5-Star and there were two roaring fires to heat your buns on.

I reckon I'll be paying another visit on Sunday after our Festive Crimbo Camp... Must find out if they do an All-day Breakfast  :)

Crackin' day at the Mourne Archery Centre, had a great time and I think its amazing value for two hours.  This archery thing could become infectious... ;)

Maghera Inn was a splendid spot for a bite to eat.  Very cosy, friendly staff, good food and not a bad bunch of folk to munch down a Christmas dinner with either :)

Hope we can do this again soon!
